"Rocky Mountain Mystery," coming tomorrow to the Rlalto the ater, Is a blend of the famous Grey, rlp-roarlng outdoor action with the added element of a gripping murder mystery. Adapted from 7.ane Grey's "Golden Dreams." "Rvky Mountain Mvstery" features Randolph Scott and Ann Sheridan in the romantic lead and a supporting cast that Includes such well-known actors as Charles "Chic" Sale and Mrs. Leslie Carter, who makes her debut In this film. The action of "Rocky Mountain Mystery" Is set In a deserted mining town In the West where ftn seed recluse has summoned his family to distribute hts wealth before he dies. Sole owner of a fabulously weatthy radium mine, he hires Ran dolph Scott, a mining engineer, to rtart operations. The caretaker nf the estate la mys teriously murdered and an unknown rider connected with his death. Shortly afterwards, one of the old man's nephews Is murdered under strange circumstances and Scott turns his effort to uncovering the murderer. Assisted by "Chic" Sale, who plays a deputy. Scott begins to track down clue that will lead to the criminal. Suddenly. Ann Sheridan, the girl he loves, disappears. Then a series of tartllng. rapid-fire events lead to the rapid climax and the surpris ing disclosures of the real criminal SCREEN REVIEW (By Dick Applegate.) "Little Colcnel." the picture co starring Lionel Barrymorc and Shir ley Temple, while having many en tertaining high lights. Is not up to standard for those two, In my opin ion. Barrymore is convincing a the southern gentleman, but then he very seldom Is not convincing, no matter what he happens to be por traying, and personally I think the white beard and bushy eye-browB are wasted on a man of his talents. They hide most of his usually re markable facial expressions, the high lights of most of hi shows. Miss Temple, attired in an old fashioned dress of her grandmother's, is as darling as ever, but the role 1 a difficult one, and the little star la not quite up to -the acenea In which she Is supposed to vent her temper in rage, I think. Perhaps her tiny head is beginning to turn under all the adulation of the people of the nation. There certainly could be no wonder if that be the case. At any rate she is not nearly so con- vinclrw as she ha been In other picture. Perhapa I am Just super critical. Every small boy and girl In the county will enjoy the picture, but , few of those who are past that Qualification may agree with me that the picture Is only fair, even If the eastern crltlca do give It a high ranking. One of the high lights, along with Barrymore's excellent portrayal, Is the stairstep dance number of the colored star. BUI Robinson. It was dim good. So much I am unable to say for Jfhn Lodge, a the north erner who carries off the old colonel's daughter. Evelyn Venable Is only passing fair, although 1 have en joyed her work In most of her pic tures. The Vltaphone short Is better than most Vltaphone shorts, but that's not saying much. They're generally lou-iy. I'd rate the whole program about two stars. If I may take the 'Liberty' of doing so. Std. Brands . Std. Oil Cal Std. Oil N. J . Trans.
