PAGE FIVE JEFFREY BLASTS OPPONENTS OF TDWNSEND PLAN MEDFORD MATL TRIBUXE. MEDFORD, OREGON. THTESDAT, FEBRUARY 21, 1935. 800 Hear Portland Attorney at Armory Meeting Present Relief System Scored Collection Taken "America on the March." wa the theme of a 60-mlnut talk delivered by Judge John A. Jeffrey of Portland, former prosecuting attorney In southern Oregon, at the Armory last night before a crowd of approximate ly 800 Townsend old age pension plan enthusiasts who contributed a total of $50, It was estimated by President Bhurtleff, of the local Townsend club. Having stopped In Medford on a speaking tour of Oregon and north ern California. Judge Jeffrey, speak ing In behalf of C. E. Hansen of Portland, state organizer for the movement, hit the opposition aa mak ing "fool" efforts to stand in the way of a "great crusade" that he de clared would restore the nation's eco nomic atablllty along the pathways of supply and demand. Scoffs at Experts Judge Jeffrey Bald there are many symptoms of the coming success of the plan, chief of which are the "lool aubsldlzed articles In the coun try's leading newspapers." Referring to Abraham Epstein's :nvestlgatlon, the speaker declared that such eco nomic experts' advice Is worthless. "In making his Investigation," Judge Jeffrey said, "I hope Fpsteln will go so far as to find that what lies be iilnd the plan la a force of 50.000. 000 American people " The speaker reviewed the tragic re sults of the depression, declaring that the national debt is Increasing In tremendous figures, that relief con v dltlons are steadily becoming worse, snd that value has departed from property. "If the old system Is car Tied on, two years from now we will be borrowing money to carry on the ordinary expense of government." Relief system seorea Judge Jeffrey described the nat ional system of relief aa a "patch work" system. "The relief organiza tion as it has been maintained has been a, disgrace to white man's civ ilization," he declared. "When we go to the market for a pall of lard, we can hear the squeal of every pig that wns plowed under for prosperity'." Jul?e Jeffrey hit the big producers snd the federal reserve banking sys tem as harvesting the wealth of the nation In their coffers. He described the Townsend plan as one whereby taxation would be lifted from every American home under 3000 in value Snendlng money is an easy habit to learn," he said,, describing many ways In which the pensioners would pro fit by using their proposed $200a- tnonth pension. Would Release Wealth The movement, which he said Is not radical, but one of the great middle class, would release untold sralue by retiring those over 60 from competitive business and allowing a rvaat body of fit, young men and wo men to step into their places. He referred to the experiences of European countries In pensioning their aged, declaring that nearly all white countries of Europe have been around the same vicious circle that America Is traveling and have event ually established a retirement salary "In Europe the Morgans and the Mel Jons cannot control the money of a country," he declared. By the olose of March, Judge Jef frey said, it Is hoped that 40,000.000 signatures will have been sent to Washington. "Congress cannot turn down 40,000,000 signatures," he said The speaker was born and raised in the Applegate district, having at tended grade school there and high school at Jacksonville. He Is a grad uate of Oregon State college and has been practicing law in Portland for many years. While a resident of Med Jord, he was prosecuting attorney fo Jackson, Josephine, Klamath and Lake counties. IN TWO-PLY CONIES! m vallev hleh school "A" team i haMnrf after the half.
