Ml mem j The Weather Forecast: Fair toiiljht and Saturday, tout b wo mint cloudy and un&ettled Saturday; no chance In temperature. Illchest sterday 46 Ixtnpst thti morning . 26 HE mn By PAIL MAM.ON (Copyright. 1935. by Paul Mallon.) WASHINGTON, Fob. la. The of ficial "bad luck" song waa sung again Then the Macon crashed. It la '.he asm tuna heard when the United States. Britain and Prance lost each of the three airships each has had and Italy lost her one. Ao parently no one has any good luck with dirig ibles except Ger many and hir Herr Eckener. This official tune was merely PAUL .MALLO.N a polite cover-up for an almost unan imous conviction Inside the govcrn ' inent that dirigibles are too cxpensl.-e as war playthings. ... Sea admirals have always sneered at them as lair weather ships. Au thorities will tell you off-the-recor1 today that no more will be bull. But. after all the current clamor dies down, you will see money appropri ated for another dirigible half the air of the Macon and the Akron. The navy general board has recom mended It. There la a small out strong llghter-than-alr clique In the navy which now has nothing to do. S&leamen for ships have been aalc to exert strong pressure In Washing ton at times In the past. They can not do anything at this session of congress, because of the state of gen eral opinion, but they will certainly try at the next one. The real excuse offered Inside the navy lor both the Macon and the Akron disasters Is that the ships were too long (700 feet). Light structures cannot stand such length, they say, In terrific cross . wind pressures, which can break them r a you would a .match, .... This excuse has made no great Im pression, In view or the fact that earlier shorter ships have broken also. There has long been an unspokin tradition In the navy that the Ger mans are the only ones who can bu'.id and fly dirigibles. You may have noticed that the Germans are de signing their latest one strictly for commercial use. This Is probably the future of llghter-than-alr craft. They will be the freight trains of the .i!r. President Roosevelt la plodding along in his own unostentlous way with the digging of a tax-grave for the bonus. That was what Inspired the lat:st shovelful of words thrown out by the Whit. House on the government slsiies legislation. In approving that legislation. Mr. Roosevelt snld ways would have to be found to pay th; $16,000,000 extra budgetary expense Involved In It "and any other new appropriation." Everyone knew be meant the bonus. The fact la several extra budgetary appropriations are In the congres sional fire. Including $100,000,000 for social security and 60.000.000 for seed loan. These three will throw the regular budget into the red by 176,000.000. Thia would not cause much fretting In a year when nearly five billions will be arwnt outsld the budget, ex cept that the bonus la coming alone The President is going to insist that It carry taxes to pay It. The tax talk has been rather warm on the Inside lattely. It started sev eral weetts ago. Authoritative new dealers began to wag their heads con fidentially In the presence of out aiders and 'murmur that they were going to have to Increase: taxes thin ymr. Not a word has been said "t ftelallv. but Inspired Ftories have been broadcast t!.at a general bill increas ing taxes will be introduced in Maxci. Some skeptic have suspected thh was part of the bonus star teg? and have remained unconvinced. They mav be wrong' It Is certain that a small resolu tion will be passed renewing some of the taxes which expire this year. The general assumption has be;n that It would not include any In creases.
