NCREASE OUTPUT
Total Value $1,172,000 in
1934 As Compared With
$526,188 During 1933,
Summary Discloses.
The total vslus of th output of
gold, silver, copper, lesd. nd lnc
from mlnss In Oregon Inereeeed from
528.188 In 1933 to bout 1, 173,000
In 1S34, t gln of 1J3 per cent, ac
cording to the V. 8. Bureau of mlnee.
Department of the Interior. The 134
total value was the highest since
1030 and reflected the lncreaeed price
of gold and ellver as well as the Im
proved conditions In the Industry
that encouraged larger production
throughout the state. Oold supplied
approximately 97 per cent of the to
tal value and sliver almost the entire
balance. Copper, lead, and sine pro
duction waa small and the aggregate
value of these metals was less than
8.600,
The gold output In Oregon In 1034
was about 33,300 tine ounces, valued
at 11,136,390 (S34.95 a fine ounce),
compared with 30.340 ounces, valued
at 617,336 (135.68 a fine ounce), In
1933. Placer mining, although hamp
ered by water shortages, contributed
the larger part of the output. The
Rogue River Oold company, which
operated a gold dredge on roots
Creek In this county, was one of the
outstanding producers of placer gold
In the state last year, although shut
down for 7 months out of the year
due to lsclc of water.
In Western Oregon the production
of placer gold came largely from
Jackson and Josephine counties and,
with the exception of the Rogue Rlv
er Oold Co., was derived largely from
small operations and sold to local
banks and bullion buyers.
Principal producers of lode gold
In this section of tho state were the
Chlertan and Huckleberry mines In
Douglas county, the Ashland mine
In Jsckson county, .and the Rainbow
mine In Joerphlne county. In the
Ashland mine additional equipment
was Installed and a cyanide plant was
under construction, while In the
Jacksonville district there waa activi
ty In both quarts and placer mining.
