JANUARY 6. 1933. j Society and Club Events Reviewed for Week PAGE TWO Valley Ushers In The New Year At Many Gay Parties The valley wa by no mean half hearted In the manner In which H bid goodbye to the year 1934 and welcomed In the new year 1936. Not only Medford but the outlying dis trict celebrating the hopeful event with dinner parties, dances, and houM part lea. The five public parties which at tracted large numbers of the vaca tionists were thceo held at the Med ford hotel, the Town club, the Elks temple, the Oriental Gardens, and the Dreamland dance hall. The party of the Hotel MM ford cona later of a dinner danoe beginning at nine o'clock and lasting until two p. m. Eighty couples danced to the music furnished by Steve Whipple's orches tra. The Town club gave a dance for its members and their guest at which Al Stewart and his orchestra supplied the music. More than two hundred couples attended the Elks club dance, which featured Merle OarUon and his Col umbia Recording orchestra. The dance at the Oriental Gardens was sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars utilizing both the large and the small dance floors, each hav ing been supplied with an orchestra. The dancing at Dreamland waa to the music of Dlnty Moore's orchestra. Mr. and Mri. Raymond Crawford entertained a party of sixteen for the oolebratlon of the new year. After dinner the party went to the Cuter Ian theatre. On New Year's Day Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Slpes gave a dinner party ol ten In honor of Mrs. Slpea' father. Mr. A. E. Romlne, who was celebrat ing bis seventieth birthday. Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Nichols of South Holly entertained the Y. P. society of St. Peters Lutheran church on De cember 31. The gathering waa In the lorm of watch party, following which resolutions for 1036 were read. Mrs. E. Huener of Jacksonville won first prize. Prlres at euchre were awarded to Mrs. A. Relnklng. Mr. E. E. Tarns, Mr. Paul Demmer. and Mrs. J. Mut ton. Reverend and Mrs. E. F. Bartlam entertained the vestry of Bt. Marks Episcopal church and their wives at a tea from four to sli New Year's ve. The KnlghU of Pythias held a New Year's Eva party at thetr hall. Cards and various other games were played with prizes being awarded. Refreshment were served to welcome in the new year. Mr. and Mrs. Driver entertained twelve of their frlenda with a New Year's Eve dinner party at their home on the Old Stage road. Another New Yv'i Eve party waa held at' the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. Ramatrom of Green Acres, Centre) Point. Sixty-five guests were Invited and entertained with dancing a the old year ended and the new. began. Mrs. B. O. Tama sang a baritone solo "Memories," and at midnight de votional activities were conducted' by Reverend H, H. Young. Later re freshment were served'. Thursday night, December 37, the Wesley league held a Christmas party a t the Fl rs t M . E . church. Abou t twenty-five young people attended the party, with many college stu dent home for the holidays present. The evening wa spent in playing game and comparing notes from school life. GOULD'S GRANDDAUGHTER WEDS In a surprise elopement, Anna Gould, whose grandfather was Jay Gould, railway financier of post Civil War days, was married at Harri son, N. Y., to Frank Spencer Meador, 24-year old actor from San Saba, Tex. Later the bride announced she would become a Catholic so a religious ceremony could be added to the registry office marriaae. According to word received here he was to open In a new show, "Foola Rush In," at the Vanderbllt theater Christmas night. The production, under direc tion of Outhrle McCllnttc, husband of Katharine Cornell. Include a cast of younger actor who appeared last season with great success In "New Faces," wh'ch enjoyed almost a year's run. Later this year Seymour Is to ap pear with Miss Cornell In a drama written for her by a young European playwright, Seymour also, expects to go to London this fall to appear in a new Noel Coward play. New York, during the holidays, was an exceedingly gay place, must of the depression gloom having disap peared, according to Seymour, who expressed a desire to return to Med ford, where he formerly lived, to enjoy tho winter sports of which he was particularly fond. Auxiliary Calls Special Meeting There will be a special meeting of the Ladles auxiliary of F. O. E.. Cra ter Lake' Aerie No. 2003 on Sunday. January 8, at 3:00 p. m. Lt. Harrell and Family End Visit Lt. Ben Harrell. Mrs. Harrell (the former Miss Harriet Campbell), and their Infant son Hunter C, who have been visiting at the home of Mrs. Harrell's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Campbell of Medford, are leaving today for Lt. Harrell's home base at Fort Warren, Cheyonne, Wyo ming. They expect to atop at Eugene for a week visiting friends, before proceeding to Portland for a few days. From Portland they are plan ning to drive back to Cheyenne via Boise and Salt Lake City. Auxiliary Meets At Mrs. Myers On Thursday afternoon the Auxil iary of the 'Woman's Foreign Mis sionary of the First Methodist Episco pal church were entertained at the home of Mrs. O. V. Myers on the North Pacific highway. The opening exercises of devotions were conducted by Mrs. Corder. Subject "Contempla tion and the Making of the Good Attractive," with portions of the 96th Psalm being read. Mrs. McNary gave an outline of the reading course to be featured. President Mrs. Wiley appointed a committee to confer with the committee of the Home society on the feasibility of uniting the two societies in Joint monthly meetings. Mrs. Hedges conducted the study program with Mrs. Myers giving the book review, a chapter on "Educa tion." A leaflet, "Our Force In Japan" was given by Mrs. Hedges. "Star of the East" and the "Christ mas Child." two musical numbers, were contributed by records. The closing number, "God Be With You 'Till We Meet Again," was sung In concert. The hostesses.
