SLEEP SICKNESS Tests With Animals Shows Positive Results Solution Of Mouse Brain Provides Vaccine Basis. . ny tiowAnu w. blakeki.ek Associated Pross Science Editor PITTSpUHGH. Dec 28. (APj A promising itart toward vacclnttlon agaltwt eleeplng elckneta wm in n ou need at the American Aaoelatlon for the advance of science today. The sleeping sickness vaccine Is developing from the same studies In the New York City health depart ment which produced the recent!? announced vaccine for Immunizing children against Infantile paralysis For sleeping sickness, the vaccine has been tried only on animals. The new experiment was described briefly bv Maurice Brodv. M. D., ol the New York health department. Ha Is working under the direction of William H. Park, M. D. .Mire Inoruloted They took sleeping alckneas virus from human patients in the St. Louis outbreak and Inoculated mice, producing sleeping sickness In the animals. As this disease attacks the nerves and th brain, they sought In the brains of the animals for the hoped vaccine. They took a five per cent solution or the mouse brnln and treated- them with formalin which killed the sleeping sickness virus. This dead virus they then Inject ed Into 100 healthy mice. It immun ized a)! the animals so that they could not afterward be Infected with sleeping si ok new. Furthermore, the vaccine Itself had no apparent bad effect on the mice. The possible end of Infantile para lyftla w also forecast today. The'rvJults of two different vac cinia, one discovered In Philadelphia, tbe other In New York, gave this pror-lse. Speedy ArCton Bot are speedy, one showing Im munising effects In a little over three day. And both m-lthln a week. This indicates that both may pos es the power to stop epidemic out breaks before they become serious. The Philadelphia vaccine results on ! in children were reported by John A. I Kolmer, M. D., of Temple university. None had Infantile pttrnlynls. But they were poor subjects for the vac cine testa because most of them were convalescing from other dis eases. Nevertheless their blood after vac elnatlon became so strongly resistant that It successfully neutralized hu man Infantile paralysis virus from the 19,14 California epidemic. Tills means that In a test tube the chil dren's blood took all the virulence out of the agency that caused the Infantile paralysis. Experiments with animals lndlente that this neutralisation test Is "val id." a aign of real Immunity gained irom vaccination. Use Mall Tribune want U AT FULL GOSPEL Rev. Paul B.
