CANADIAN WILD LIFE .
WORKING SOUTHWARD
DEAD WOOD, S. D. (UP) Wild
animals from northern Canadian for
ests are working southward, accord
ing to reports or several hunters
during the recent deer season.
A Canadian lynx weighing 60
pounds, the largest of Its type ever
seen here and the first lynx re
ported here in many seasons, was
killed by a Dead wood hunter. Others
reported seeing signs of a mountain
Hon, an animal that has sot been
seen In the Black Hills for years.
4000 Bootleggers Listed.
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (UP)
The Chattanooga Police department
for years has kept a roster of boot
leggers, and the list now totals about
4000, or one out of every 30 Inhabi
tants here. The list began seven and
one-half years ago. Many in the list
have long since gone out of busi
ness, so the I in 30 ratio is misleading.

Dr. Charles T. Sweeney waa the
speaker at the regular luncheon of
the Lions club Wednesday, giving an
the progress of medical science.
Instructive and Interesting talk on
Dr. Sweeney cited many of the
great stride In the medical profes
sion, which he said has made more
advancement In the past 60 years
than In any previous 600-year period.
He discussed the work of such doc
tors as Pasteur and Lister, telling of '
the work they did In the Isolation of j
organisms, and in asepsis. I
He said that the ravage of dlpth-!
therla 60 years ago frequently took ;
very second child when epidemics j
broke out In thickly populated areas,
but since the Isolation of the germ
and the discovery of an antitoxin,
dlpththerla epidemics may be pre
vented. Referring to Dr. DaPoe, famous phy
sician for the Dlonne qulntluplets.
Dr. Sweeney said that tf the typical
country doctor had been a theorist,
he probably would have been unsuc
cessful In caring for the Dlonne ba
bies. He said that the greatest medl-1
cal discoveries have been made by
country physicians.
The Lions discussed plana for the
Christmas distribution of toys, which

the volunteer firemen, and dlatrlbu

which George W. Newberry of the;
Med ford Business college, chairman ;
of the Lions' committee for the blind.
la to be In charge.
Besides Dr. Sweeney, Tom Burke o: .
Portland, Associated Oil Co., was r
guest at the meeting.
The next meeting of the club will
be held January 2, as Wednesday oi
next week comes on the day follow-'
lng Christmas. '
