WASHINGTON (DP) Repeal of
prohibition Is pouring 4OO,00O,0O0
to 4000,000,000 annually Into the
United states treasury In the form
of liquor taxes.
This huge sum, although under
estimates made prior to repeal,
supplying the federal government
with about sixth of Its total in1
come. More millions are flowing into
state and local treasuries from levies
on manufacture and sale of liquor
imposed by them.
BaMs of Collections.
Federal revenue from sale and
manufacture of liquor appeared to
day on the basis of collections over
the past 10 months to have settled
around the (35,000,000 a month level,
or (420,000,000 annually.
Even higher collections are expect
ed shortly by treasury officials when
more states permit sale of liquor and
when more Inroads are made Into
the bootlegging activities which are
estimated to be cheating the govern
ment out of millions of dollars.
Up to October 31 total federal col
lections on alcoholic beverages, with
8.3 per cent beer since April 7, 1833,
end distilled liquor from December
0, 1033, were (453,483,881. Nearly
(200,000,000 was accounted for by all
classes or beer,

At the present time the treasury
estimates that there are approxi
mately a qunrter million of retail
beer and liquor establishments scat
tered throughout the country.
California leads all other states
with 2B.808 retail liquor dealers and
17.100 beer dealers. Illinois Is sec
ond with 31,523 retail liquor dealers
and 16,141 beer retailers.
The country st a whole on June
80. last, had 307.382 retail liquor
dealers and 230,322 retail beer deal
ers. These outlets were said to ap
proximate the number In pre-pro-hi
bit Ion days. '
