Editor: Buppose a prosperous farmer had 10 grown sons all employed eight houra per day performing the va rious operations necessary In plow ing, seeding, harvesting, etc., thus providing an adequate-and Indepen dent living for this veryHarge family. ' Now suppose again that this farm er bought a tractor with multiple plows, a harvester and all the other lato labor saving devices so that ths man labor required In doing the nam work was cut In half. There now being eight houra' work per day for five men, and these five men can now produce suiiicient xor bountiful living for the entire fam ily, but What about the five men who era not now needed to work on ths farm. There is no other employment available In the community because the same labor saving , equipment has been supplied to all the other farmers and the same condition ap plies to the Industrial centers Will the farmer take the five sons who are not needed and give them as allowance of half rations and, place them at another table In the dining room, or will he say, "Sinot the macnine nas ngntenea our our- den of labor by half, we will now enjoy more leisure, and will all work four hours per day and all shore la the proceeds the same as when all worked eight hours pe day"? If this Is not dons then necessarily ths five men who still work the regulation eight hours per day must support the five who are to remain idle. The big family comprising the peo ple of the United Statea are now confronted with exactly ths asms problem. How will they solve ltt They can do It by balancing ths hours required In Industry, with m hours of those who must necessarily labor, and who wont to earn their own living. To accomplish this would likeiy mean a five or six-hour day, ano India try says It can't be dons. But Industry said the same thing when men worked 13 hous per day. How ever, through the years of strikes, lockouts, violence, bloodshed and the billions In property loss, ths hours were gradually forced down to 11 then 10. then 0 and finally to 8 houra per day, yet industry not only survived, but has prospered and ex panded tremendously. Industry evidently atlll oe neves is thrives on "chesp labor." which, of course, means poverty for ths masses. Industry brought us the negro from Africa,, the coolie from China and pauper labor from other countries) to Insure cheap labor until the con gress finally put a stop to ths prac tice. Ths logical conclusion, therefore. Is thst our present difficulty can be traced to one single word "greed." Labor produces all ths wealth that Industry enjoys and our laws pro tect the property rights of Industry.
