At the state convention of Oregon
district attorneys. District Attorney
Oeorge A. Codding of Jackson county
will propose a resolution asking that
the Oregon criminal syndicalism law
revert back to its original form be
fore changed by the legislature at Its
1938 session. The meet will be held
In Portland, December 30, 31 and 32.
The last legislative session revised
the criminal syndicalism law until
law enforcing agencies claim It lost
much of It force. A movement,
backed by Portland Interests, Is now
under way to have the syndicalism
law stricken from ths statutes. One
of the grounds advanced la that It
Infringes on the constitutional rights
of free speech and free press.
Prosecutions under the criminal
syndicalism law have been few, less
than half a dozen being tried.
Ths past six months there have
been two convictions one Involving
Dirk DeJonge, Portland communist
candidate for mayor at the last elec
tlon. DeJonge was sentenced to seven
years In state prison. The other con
viction waa directed against Kyle
Pugh, found guilty by a Jackson
county Jury last Saturday and sen
tenced to a five-year term. Notice
of appeal to the supreme court has
been served In both cases.
Pugh waa found guilty of ths ssle,
possession, distribution and public
display of communistic literature In
this county last September.
