Fire In Boxcnr A small fire In a boxcar near the Southern Paclf!c freight house Sunday afternoon waft immediately extinguished by the fire department after causing alight dam age. Officials believe the fire to have been started by a transient. It was discovered and reported by a passerby. m Return from Meeting Having at tended the meeting of the Oregon State Hotel association In Portland over the week-end, Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Reynolds and Mrs. W. M. Clemenson of the Jackson hotel, returned to Medford last evening. They were ac companied on the trip by Mrs. Robert Forter, daughter of Mrs. Clemenson. Reports Accident A minor acci dent Saturday evening at Fourth and I Central was reported to city police1 by drivers of two cars which collided. Jack Vlguers Groves, 18. of 1704 North Riverside, and Mrs. George Buckley, 45. of Ruch, Ore. Police reports show that the transmission on Groves' air locked, causing Mrs. Buckley's auto to run into the rear of the vehicle. Ice Causes Accident Ice on the Jacksonvllle-Ruch highway, near lw ummlt of Jacksonville hill. cauexl a minor accident Saturday morning, according to city police reports. A ear driven by L. H. Wyant, 62, of Xake Creek. Ore., ran Into one being driven down grade by A. Fleming of Applegate, as the latter skidded into Wyant's path, the reports show. Fender Mashed The fender on an auto being driven by Jesse O. Cor nell, 53, of 523 South Holly street, waa damaged In a minor auto acci dent at 11:30 p. m. Saturday, whl"h occurred when Cornell drove away from the curb on South Central ave nue, and was struck by a passing auto driven by O. J. Hill, box HCI, Medford, according to city police re ports. Captain of Detectives John Keegan said today: "This 'dehorn' business must stop and now Is the time to push It through. I'm going through the statements we have taken from the victims and they will be the basis for our action. Would Fix Responsibility Captain Keegan tried to determine whether any of the alcohol vendora sold the fluid to persona they knew were "dehorn" addicts. It is not Illegal to sell denatured alcohol for purposes other than drinking. Full responsibility for the large number of deaths will be fixed if such action is at all possible, accord ing to Mayor Carson, who said: "Every person found to have fur nished or sold any of the products responsible for the deaths will be ap prehended Immediately and prosecut ed we'll do the talking afterwards." Four deaths Sunday, and one today, which were attributed to "dehorn" alcohol brought the total number of Wins Decree and other fraternal organisations of the city and county were scheduled to take similar action today. Dotens of petitions, protesting against granting a parole to BH Fehl, partner of Banks In the Jackson county agitation, were also dispatch ed yesterday to Salem. Fehl haa served the minimum time of hla sen tence of four years for ballot-theft conspiracy. The petitions ask. that should Fehl ever be granted release, a condition of his parole, be he not return to Jackson county. Word that Banks waa seeklnr pardon, came Saturday morning from Salem. The newa galvanized cltlaens into action Immediately. The state attorney -general's office took steps to protest the murderer's release, when the pardon petition Is formally pre sented to the pardon board. I'nder-Cover Campaign It seems a quiet move for the re lease of Banks, has been underway for several weeks. It consisted of sending a form letter to the governor, urging his freedom. In two years of strife that wracked this county, shot and killed Constable George A. abotu ten o'clock, on the morning of complaints arose that Banks was re ceiving favors, which brought denial. The aupreme court decided the ap peal against Banks, and affirmed the lower court in every particular. Banks, In the fifteen months he has spent In the penitentiary, first served in the prison laundry, but sev eral months ago was assigned to the prison library. The constable came to serve a warrant upon Banks, follow ing his Indictment for ballot-theft. Banks had boasted he would kill any one who sought to serve a warrant on him. The shot was fired from ft high- powered big game rifle, as Banks stood In the interior of his home, and his wife opened the door. Following the killing. Banks was placed under arrest by the state po lice, and rushed to Grants Pass for safe-keeping. Mrs. Banks was also placed under arrest. Tried In Lane County Banks and his wife went on trial In Lane county, May 3, 1933, charged with flrat degree murder. After a trial that lasted 31 days.anka was found guilty of second degree murder. His Wife was acquitted. Banks' entry to state prison, to start serving the life sentence Im posed by Judge G. F. Skipworth ox Eugene, was delayed by an appeal to the state aupreme court. He was fin ally taken to the penitentiary, August 0. 1033.
