IODINE BENEFICIAL TO BROOD MARES CORVALLIS. (Spl.) Wtdesprcnd Interest In the research In feeding Iodine to brood mares at Oregon Stnte college has resulted In a re quest to staff members concerned to present a scientific paper covering the subject. Such a paper by B. W. Rod en wold and Dr. B. T. Slmms. of the state college, wns presented be fore the American Society of Animal Production at Its annunl national meeting In Chicago the first week In December. The Oregon State college workers began experimenting with Iodine feeding In 1032, after severe losse through the death of foals had been experienced. Accurate records main tained since that time strongly in dicata that the feeding of is grains of potassium Iodide per week to brood mares the last half of the ges tation period will eliminate a com mon goitrous condition and bring foals that are stronger, more vigor ous and healthy. Five grains of po tassium Iodide per week was found sufficient to prevent goiter tn calves. The material waa fed by mtxlng a stock solution so that one ounca of tha liquid poured on the grnln once a week would give the required dosage. The treatment Is recommend ed only for regions where a deficien cy of Iodine In the regular feed stuffs results In goitrous condition om foala and other young livestock. i Ev2ois VsJley !
