Addreee Dr. William Brady, J6J El camlna, Beverly Hllla, Cal. , CAIXINO A UtACK A qi'ACK. Folks, you must not believe all the doctor tell you about me. and. doctori. you should not take too literally the thing your pa tients tell you X said. A California lady tells me poignant story of her experience In the small, town where she tb- sides. She had read repeatedly about the Joys of the d 1 a t h ermy method of re- movul ol tonsil and, although the had had hers cut out In the con ventional Castlliau way 10 years ago. and found the experience quite un pleasant, still, when the tonsils grew again to a troublesome state she rather welcomed the excuse to have a whirl at this new f angled dia thermy method, which, according to my column, must be a positive lark for the patient. But her family physician wu sorry he had no diathermy apparatus. However, he was only too happy o take her to the office of a colleague, who had the necessary equipment. Yes. Indeed, with the greatest pleasure this other physician would take care of the patient. Now, how would she prefer the work done, In two or three sittings or In six or eight at weekly Intervals? Right away It seems fairly evident that the doctor was a novice at It, for If he really had the technical skill and experience he would net ask the patient such a foot question. Well, the lady eat blithely down and submitted to the treatment. She did so once. She says never again. She has experienced a good many painful things but never any thing' to compare with the torture of that treatment. The doctor declared that she was so resistant that he had to use three times as powerful a current as lew resistant patients required. What Is my opinion about that? When she' told the doctor that r had said the treatments ahould be practically painless . Honestly, I wouldn't blame the doctor for losing his temper right there. But he preserved his equani mity admirably and got off this rather neat rejoinder: He remarked that If Dr. Brady Is so good he would have no time for writing news paper articles. , You get ' the Implication, dear readers? I have often used that argument, hope effectively, In answering queries of correspondents about self oommendfd specialists, I remind the correspondents that If the charlatan were really as good as he says he Is in his booklets or come -on circulars, he'd be kept so busy with, practice that he could scarcely find time to NEW YORK DAY BY DAY By 0. 0. Either he was not sin- I jcere In promising the voters his sup- j - port, or his sudden change of attl- i tude has but one explanation, money Influence. Mr. Creel tries to make .the Idea seem Impossible by saying that It would take 34 billion dollars per year or approximately one-half of the present Income of the people to operate It. With over 17 million peo ple now. on the relief rolls (figures by Mr. Harry L. Hopkins, manager of the FERA) thl amount might be somewhere near the present Income of those who are fortunate enough to have some employment, but as an actual fact, only a billions of dollars is required to start the fund, after which It automatically and fo.iver takes care of Itself. To the Editor: Because you have seen fit to edito rially quote Mr. George Creel In his criticism of the Townsend old age revolving pension plan, will you kindly grant me sufficient space to nnswer. It seems strange that George Creel. who was defeated In the late pri maries as candidate for the office of governor of California, and who voluntarily, white seeking the voters support, promised them his influ ence at Washington for the success of the Townsend plan, an aid now voice his objection to the plan by offering the only excuse pronounced by any critic, that "it can't be done." It seems that but one of twb reasons Attorney General Cummlngs who would like to prosecute Andrew Mel lon, the aluminum king. Is virtually surrounded by aluminum In his dally life. In fact the new Justice depart ment building Is now known aa the aluminum palace, a fact which must be gratifying to Mr. Mellon. The huge doors at the various ground floor entrances are ilumlnum as are all corridor doors, window frames, swinging gates between rooms, fixtures, railings and what not. The excuse Is that the building was designed prior to the new deal. A lawyer recently went to the NRA legal division with this argument: All codes spell the word employee with two "e's." This implies the fem inine gender. Therefore the codes properly apply only to female work ers. So far he has not been able to get anyone to listen to him. The petition sets forth, that owing to a lack of funds Reed was unable to perfect an appeal to the state su preme court. He was defended by At torneys Gus Newbury and Don R. Newbury, appointed as counsel by the court. The petition attacks the veracity of Lnymon's testimony. Reed, In his own defense claimed that he had ridden from Denver with McQuade and Jackson to Ashland, and upon arrival In that city Jack son was intoxicated, and McQuade "took him for a walk." while Reed sought a registration station. He tes tified he strolled alone about Ash land, and went into the hamburger stand for a cup of coffee. While there he heard of the murder, and secured a room, where he remained until the next morning, when he headed north In his auto. The auto was found November 19, 1931. by state police officers, papers in the car furnished Information relative to Reed, Jackson, and McQuade. Reed claimed that he "never saw his companions after they parted upon arrival In Ashland. Arrested In Colorado Reed was arrested Christmas eve at Longmont, Colorado, at the home of kin, and returned to this county for trial early in January. The Juy that heard his case deliberated nine hours before reaching a decision, at one time considering the extreme penalty. Reed, In a statement attached to the petition affirms his Innocence, and stresses his lack of funds to pro cure an appeal. At the trial. Reed offered an alibi, that he was not with McQuade and Jackson at the time of the murder and that he was a victim of circum stances and bad companions. The slaying of Knott, came clos upon the heels of the murder of an other Ashland policeman, for which James Kingsley was hanged In state prison, and public sentiment was high.
