Nny Ye Smudge Pot Ut Art am Perry. The Last Laugh UI'TON SIN'CLAIR is himsef again. No longer embittered by his defeat, withdrawing his charges of corruption and fraud, Upton is writing a book entitled 'I, Candidate for Gover nor and How I Got Licked." Says the Ef'w candidate: "I shall tell of ray negotiations with Roosevelt, McAdoo, Creel, lekes, 'Wallace, Father Coughlin and other national figures. These interviews were high state secrets two months ago but now they can be told." "Plans" continues Upton, "will be disclosed for spreading the Epic movement all over the country and take over the Democratic party at least in all the western states." The San Francisco Chronicle which bitterly opposed Sinclair in the recent election will print this book as a serial', which it maintains will be intensely interesting and of future political importance. The book will be illustrated by campaign cartoons, which were , anti-Sinclair, but the author declares were "all very funny." ' . .' THUS the law of compensation works for the benefit of the Epic candidate. 'His defeat was due to the fact that he had written books, and assuiled practically everything that the American Bourgeoisie holds dear. Now because he CAN write books, he promises to regain the front page and gather in a nice little fortune, as a direct result of his defeat. That this post-campaign volume will be a best seller, there can be little doubt. That it will prove embarrassing to Presi dent Roosevelt, and his administration, there can be no question. Had Upton defeated Governor Merriam, there would be no book, there would be no handsome royalties rolling in, there would be nothing but worry and trouble ahead. As it is, the Epic candidate, not only has "the last laugh," he enjoys a revenge that is not only immediate, but promises to be exceedingly profitable. . . The Supreme Court Justice who voiced the opinion grant ing this request, stated the court believed Lamson guilty, but didn't believe the state had proved it. Charles Tcdcsco, of Rotlondo Beach, California, convicted of the brutal murder of a friend for $1000 life insurance, con demned to hang on Friday, had his sentence commutted to life imprisonment, this action being based upon the same ruling by the state supremo court. ' It is generally believed in California that Lanisoji will never go to trial a second time, but will soon be given his liberty. Judging by the records in similar cases this man Tedesco, will never suffer a life term, but in a few years will be given a parole. Yet we wonder why wo have such a disgraceful crime wave in this country, and why so little is done about itl This Is Football Week FOOTBALL will be tho all important event on this week's program. On Saturday the Medford high school team, un defeated this season, will play tho Hood River team, which has even a more impressive record. The winner of this post-season game will in all likelihood, be named to play in Portland Thanks giving day for tho state title. Medford has "n fine team. Naturally everyone wants the team to win. Nothing will contribute more toward this end, than to show the boys and Coach Burgher, that not only every one in the city but every one in the county is behind them. This can best be shown by a record-breaking attendance at this game backed up by a big advance sale in tickets, and hearty support throughout tho contest, not only on the part of the cheering sections, but on the part of the assembled citizenry. In no game is popular support more important than in foot ball. Win, lose or draw, let there be no doubt when this im portant game is over, that the High School team, had the entire populaeo of Jackson county, behind them. NEW YORK DAY BY DAY By O. O. Individuals with bronchial trouole of any kind of recurring winter cough may secure for themselves the the advantage of conditioned air, at least for one -third of the time, by ft very simple means. Fit one window of your bedroom with a full size screen of unbleached mus lin. That will ex clude wind, draft, snow, rain, dust, bugs, but admit light and fresh air. Such acreens of unbleached mus lin have been used for the venti lation of school rooms In winter time. In the north and east, and that simple, economical plan haa given uniform satisfaction. If It's good for the children It's good for the old folks. Try It out this winter ami see how much better you come thru the season. It conserves fuel, too. Takes compartlvely little fuel, too. keep a, schoolroom or a bedroom tol erably comfortable when there Is a window scheen ventilation. Helps to keep a more suitable humidity. Cool nlr is always more soothing to the respiratory mucous membranes than hot air. I returned from a night call one cold winter night to find my baby having croup. I wrapped the child In blankets and sat In the open window with her. It did not take long for the cold, humid, clear, sedative night air to bring relief to the croup. Of course the child was so well cov ered that there waa no "exposure" or discomfort from tne cold. Every person, young or old, who lb subject to any kind of ailment of the respiratory tract, should always strive to avoid exposure to heated dried out air at night. This does not Imply that any one need endure discomfort from cold. The sleeping equipment should be comfortable, of course, and if necessary one or another means of artificial warmth should be used say a big hot water Jug, or hot Iron, or what have you to keep the feet warm In bed. With a snug warm bed. It Is much better for health In every respect, and particularly for the af fected respiratory organs, to have cool, damp, soothing air to breathe all night. I suspect (Just another ot my surmises wJUch I can't prove) that outdoor air contains vitamins or pro-vltamlns, precursors of vltamlm which are destroyed by cooking or overheating. Anyway, no matter n w cold or stormy the night, persons with bronchial or "catarrhal" trouble should take their air raw and not cooked. It helps them to endure thn unhygienic conditions they must en dure every day. Comment on the Day's News .... F YOU want to get an Idea how 1 well off we are out here, you should go back through the drouth stricken sections of the Middle West," a friend who has Just re turned from a trip by air to the East,, told this writer the other day. "You will come back thoroughly satisfied with your own country." THE worst of the drouth damage, he says, la in the region lying between the Rockies and the Mis souri river. Conditions In this area are truly pitiful, . "In the Dakotas," he says, "espec ially In the western part, their grain and hay crops are practically total failures, and feed Is shorter than I ever saw It anywhere. "About the only forage they have to carry over what livestock they have remaining Is a mixture of Russian thistles and other weeds that they cut while still green and stacked. So scarce Is other feed that cattle are going after this poor stuff as If they liked It." If you know what the Russian thistle la. you can get an Idea from this statement of what the feed situation Is back there. SEVERAL places," he says. 'i saw wheat sprouting among the thistles they've had some rain since the beginning of fall and asked If they were puttlag out win ter wheat. "No." was the answer. "That Is wheat sowed A YEAR AGO last spring and the rains this fall are the first moisture sufficient to cause It to sprout." 80ME areas," he says, "there were rams In late June or early July, and they put out corn. Up around Cheyenne, which is one of the great cattle sections, you see occasional bunches of a dozen or so In place of the thousands you ordinarily see. "The cattle have simply been shipped out of the country. The government has taken over most oi them, either moving them into other areas or slaughtering them." CATTLE prices are still low, ana for this there are two good reasons. Cattle supplies for years have been above demand, and in addition we now have the abnormal slaughter Involved In getting rid oi the herds in the drcuth area. But the future, over a period oi two or three years, should be bet ter. Reduction of supplies resulting from the drouth should result In a material rise in prices ss soon as conditions adjust themselves. N HURON, South Dakota," fie 1 says, "ft leading banker told me that approximately EIGHTY per cent of all the checks clearing through his bank are government relief checks: These worst stricken sections are practically living on government relief." OUT here In the West, and back In the far East, we are paying taxes to provide this relief. But we shouldn't complain. Government re lief In the drouth areas really func tions as a means of spreading the loss, and so helps to soften the blow. Here !n Oregon, In particular. where we find a large part of our lumber market In the area that is worst hit by the .irouth, we should be thankful I fcr.t the loss is being spread.
