Riverside (MEDFOKD PAYROLL) With rpgara to trie naval recom- mendatlons that the Portland com mittee has made, your committee feels there are many organizations further north much better able to recom-; mend and suggest the needa of Ore gon defense from a naval standpoint than Is any committee from the southern part of the state. We there fore feel that whatever recommenda tions for plans of naval defense are made by the committee from Port land should be left to the interests In the northern part of the state to ad here to. As far as southern Oregon Is concerned, It seems to your com mittee most essential that an ade quately equipped air base be ltistalle l and maintained at .Medford. Our rea sons for coming to this conclusion are as follows: 1. Medford Is the logical stopping place for military planes between the California Day district and northern Oregon and Washington points. 2. An adequately equipped air base seems absolutely essential when .the defenseless character of the Oregon coast between San Francisco and As toria is taken into consideration. There Is no railroad between Eu reka and Marshfield which would per. mtt the use of mobile coast artillery. even though we believe the coast has ! adequate mobile coast artillery avail able. 3. Medford has already been re ognlzed by the army and Is now a service point for army ships with a small personnel stationed perma nently on the ground. In addition to an adequately equip ped air field, we are of the opinion that a mooring mast for the dirigible Macon should be built and main tained at the Medford airport. Tins will not involve a huge outlay of money, and the establishment of a mooring mast will allow he ahlp to reconnoiter the coast. It would pro vide another properly equipped dirig ible base between Sunnyvale, Ca!., and Tacoma. Wash., Vedftrd being ex actly midway between these two points. Your committee does not feel that there is any necessity now of attempt ing to obtain a large force of army or navy personnel, but we do wait to stress our opinion that there seems to be a great necessity for an ade quately laid out and equipped air base. Our field should be large enough to handle any number of army ships that might conceivably find it ne -essary to come into the northwest. This would undoubtedly necessitate increasing the size of Medford's pres ent airport materially. Furthermore, adequate runways, hangars, shops, etc.. should be installed by the army. An adequate air base would be of little value without proper defense! against airplane attack. Therefore, anti-aircraft guns, searchlights, and aid defense equipment should also be installed and maintained. While your committee realizes that these sug gestions involve a considerable outlay of money, it Is Its opinion that with out this outlay and expense this par ticular part of the west coast is seri ously threatened In case of war from any far eastern source. Only a comparatively few men would be required to keep the equip ment of such an air base In condi tion to be used when necessary, but this small detachment should be : maintained in order that the field may be available without delay in1 case of necessity. ELKS LAUGH AT a major operation yesterday at the Sacred Heart iiospital. Laughter reigned At the Medford Elks' ledge last night and "a good time was had by all.' The enlertalnmsnt program fur nished by Joseph Forrest, better known m "Doctor Joaephus Forre- tus," "The Medicine Man," assisted by Miss Kevah Channell, provrd to be one of the best laugh producers ever presented In Medford and was enthusiastically applauded by a large gathering of Elks. Attired in true "Medicine Mnn" costume, and surrounded by skele tons, skulls, salves and tonics, Mc "doctor" delivered & he-man hu man humorous meclizine "tecuiro." which kept the audience in laughter throughout the entire program. He also read "testimonials" pur-! ported to come from some of the prominent Elks present, and these j kept his audience in an uproar and I his victims in a panic.
