STATESMEN SEEK
(By the Associated Press)
Urgent efforts to oonclude new
armistices harassed statesmen the
world over as survivors of the last
great war today observed the slxteen
th anniversary of the truce which
ended It.
Climaxing League of Nations at
tempts to halt the war between Boliv
ia and Paraguay, five nations of the
latin American Peru, Chile, Argen
tina, Venezuela and Mexico formally
addressed to the belligerents a plea
for peace. But almost at the same
moment renewed fighting wae re
ported to have broken out In th
Chaco.
In London the naval strategists of
three nations continued their strug
gle to reach an arms armistice fore
stalling the dangers of a competitive
race of sea supremacy among the
United States, Japan and Great Brit
ain. While League sta teamen pondered
the problem of patching up some kind
kf armistice between conflicting
French and Oerman Interests in the
Saar (which votes Jan. 13 to remain
under League sovereignty, return to
Germany or become French!, new
charges of Nazi secret police terrorism
there were added to the League's
worries.

"And you talked honeity to me," McSwaln aneerei..
came into the room, aanlt Into a
chair, head In bis bands. Marian
waited a few momenta, then knelt
down before him. "Lon, dear, don't
feel that way; yon didn't do It."
"I'm afraid I did, Ian," he whis
pered. "1 can't . . . can't remember.
! could bare done anything at a time
like that . . . drunk."
"But, Lon, you weren't, I know It.
Fd awear to It. Didn't Doctor Steole
tell you?"
"That I'd been drugged? Yea, be
did. but he's mistaken. Those boys
take their liquids pretty potent and
I'm not used to It. I hadn't eaten: It
waa late. I'd worked pretty hard and
It weut to my head."
"But, Lon, a drunken person tol

There's nothing about you tbaf
would imptl you to do a thing like
that."
"1 don't know about that, either.
Ian." be answered, reaching for ber
hands ana holding tbem In a tight
grip. "I've wanted awfully to make
you see I could bold down a man
alzed Job, and make you aee you
were wrong. Maybe some placa deep
down In my subconscious mind I Or
ured that bringing borne a lot or
money would do It."
"Lon, dear, I've never doubted
your ability. It wasn't that; It was
Just mistrust of McSwaln. Lon, 1
wouldn't put It past McSwaln to
have bad those men drug you, then
cbsnge checks on you ... no. don't
protest; try now to remember tbe
pay check as you received It from
the paymaster Saturday."
LON' S head came up. "I do remem
ber." be said suddenly. "Why. of
course, I do. McSwaln bad said
something about a raise and 1 looked
to see, but It waa tbe straight one
hundred. I figured he'd been called
out of town and hadn't notified the
office. Ian. that proves It"
"No It doesn't Lon, let's Jump In
to tbe car and drive down to see
Murphy. He'll be able to help us
better than anyone else."
Half an hour later they were at
the gas station. Tbey waited until
Murpby finished serving a customer,
then called blm to the car and ques
tioned blm.

Marian. She looked at Lon, his fact
was grey.
AB'TER he had locked the garage
and entered the house be went
to tbe divan and sat down "Well
Ian, that's that."
"That's what?" she asked.
"I did It. 1 raised the check . '.' .
When I think ot what that's going to
mean . . " hla voice broke and bis
head went down between his hands,
arms propped on bis knees.
"Lon, listen; listen Lon, don't
feel that way, you did not raise tbat
check, nothing ... no amount ot cir
cumstantial evidence, can make me
believe IL"
"Yes, but the courts won't be aa
prejudiced as you are. How can they
help believing It when do?" be
asked In a strained voice.
Marian couldn't answer. Murphy's
testimony alone would prove bis
guilt. He bad been drinking. He
came In, cashed bis check, disap
peared to return Incapable ot driv
ing bla own car.
"Let's not worry about the courts,
if you return the money to McSwaln !
he'll have no reason for prosecuting.
I'm going to fix you a hot malted
milk and tben you go to bed and try
to sleep. You're going to need
strength tomorrow morning and you
must have some rest. You're still
weak from Saturday night."
He submitted to her ministra
tions In the docile manner of a sick
child, allowed ber to tuck him Into
bed. Tben, as sbe sat on the edg
of tbe bed stroking his head, hi
relaxed, responding unknowingly to
the sedative she had slipped Into
the milk.
Satisfied be waa asleep, Marias
took Hero and went to the hill
Stara scintillated over head as
though tbey bad been washed and
polished by tbe week end storm
Diablo reared Its placid bulk against
tbe mosaic pattern they made In thi
night sky.
There was an answer to Loo's
trouble. Marian knew It . . . per
haps If sbe could brush the cobwebs
of worry from her mind and think
clearly II would come to her. She
must separate Lon from herself In
her mind.
