In view of the post office depart' ment's announcement that plans are being made for establishment "at an early date ' of an Amerlcan-controll ed airline to China, the Inauguration of a trans-Paclfle flying service with' In a year Is considered a likely pros pect. Pan-American Airways, which op erates an International network of 30,000 miles serving principally South America and Central America, ts re. ported ready to undertake the pro. Ject. Government announcement of the enterprise Is taken to Indicate that the post office department will award mall contracts to help finance the service should It prove aa feas ible aa now believed. Via American Possessions The most likely route would be from some California airport via the American possessions In the Pacific such as Hawaii, Ouam, the Philip pines, and Canton, and connecting with airlines now operated In China by Pan-American In conjunction with the Chinese government. Pan American officials have said a test flight will be made within a few weeks. Preparing for trans-oceanlo serv ice, the company some time ago or dered alt huge flying boats, one of which, the Brazilian Clipper, al ready has been In operation between Miami and South America. The Brazilian Clipper, a four-en-glned craft 76 feet long, has beon rated capable of a non-stop gllght of 3.800 miles with crew and a mall load of 1.000 pounds, with full pas senger load of 32 persons, mall and express enrgo, the cruising range has been set at 1,300 miles. The longest hop on the Pacific run would be from California to Hono lulu, some 3.300 miles, which would Indicate that a larger ship than the Clipper mignt he needed for that trip if a maximum pay-load were carried. The board adopted a new regula tion prohibiting the drinking of beer and wine while standing at a bar. The regulation will not become ef fective until January 1. 1935, how ever. The board's action was taken In an attempt to remove all aspects of the old saloon from retail beer and wine dispensaries. Chairman Luther E. Gregory explained. Under the new regulation consum ers of beer and wine must alt at a table or counter to sip their bever age.
