After a four weeks' engagement at Minneapolis and ona week at Duluth we stsrted on our western tour. In the dead of winter, with the tem perature running So to .0 below rero. Our next atop was to be Orand Porks, N. D. In th. mtddl. of th. night, seven mllee from Bralnerd, Minn., th. train struck a rail that hrd cracked from extreme cold. The locomotive paased over It safely, taking th. baggage car. Th. Pullman sleeper, containing a slumbering opera company, left tho track and rolled down an embank ment. It was a wooden car. heated by a system known as th. Baker hot water heater, as most Pullmana were In those days. Th. oar caught fire almost Immediately. An attack of grippe had put m. out of the show and Z waa sleeping In a lower berth with my little daughter. Bessie. Nsn Wilkinson, my wife, and her maid, Mill. Wallace, wer. In th. upper berth.
