BR A MAN United Pitm Start Correspondent MESA VERDE CAMP, Aril!. (UP) Indian medicine men and their Red Skin brethren on m.meroiia reserva tions In Arizona have no use for mod ern medical science. For generation the practice of car ing for the sick In their native ways haa been handed down from one medi cine man to another and atlll dominate- unleu the scattered IndUn colonlee are watched closely Evidence of this wiia brought here this wek by Dr. B. Huff, physician on the Apache Indian reservation. Hia report that two Indian youth already have died from an epldem'c of meajle and many others are con fined to their tepees, some In a ser ious condition, has caused K. W Frailey, reservation superintendent, to close all schools and order the medi cine men to end their treating the cases. This has renewed a long standing flht between medical science snd the teachings of the tribal medicine men The Indians confine their caea to laiye pits, known as roasting pits, where the 111 remain as Ion aa they can endure the heat from fires built about the place. When the aony and burning can be endured no long.r they run to the nearest stream aud plunge Into the water. The fire of the roastlng-plts t sup posed to chase the evil spirits within the body outside and the water is supposed to cleanse the outer portion of all such demons, according to the superstition of the Apache tribe. This method of treatment Is one of the greatest hindrances to fighting the disease that has caused much worry on the reservation, according to Dr. Huff.
