Marion Co. Leader Warns
Voters Against G. 0. P.
Candidate As Exponent
of Chicago Alley Politics

port any candidate, Senator Sam
Brown of Marlon county, In a radio
address delivered over KOIN laat
nlnht. declared that I am certain
that the candidacy of Joe Dunne
constitute the greatest mensc
threatening the people of Oregon to
day."
Senator Brown, who waa runner-up
In the Republican gubernatorial pri
mary laat aprlng. asserted that he la
not supporting the Republican nom
inee and cautioned the voters against
injecting "Chicago alley polltlca into
Oregon." Brown flayed Dunne as a
"chameleon senator, addicted to car
rying water on both shoulders, who
was with the dairymen at milking
time and with the milk distributors
at delivery time: with the wets in
the morning and the W. O. T. U. In
the afternoon."
Knows Dunne's Record
Brown stated that emissaries of
Dunne came to him, and finally
Dunne, to show what political ap
pointments could be bestowed upon
him in return for support. He de
clined his refusal to support Dunne
la baaed upon the fact that "I know
his record."
Senator Brown aald that a good
way to Judge the kind of a record
a candidate for office will make In
the future la to "look up his record
of the past. Men do not change
their ideas or Ideals much In going
from one office to another."

Pointing to Dunne's record. Brown,
who served with Dunne during all
the time he haa been In the eenaU,
said that he haa Introduced 183 bills,
memorials and resolutions, not In
cluding bills Introduced by commit
tees of which he was a member. "The
cost of printing these bills, of cleri
cal hire and occupying the time of
the legislature entalla an enormous
expense to the state." Brown aald.
For Vested Interesta
The bllla Introduced by Dunne.
Brown said, cover every aubject rang
ing from a "flvo cent loaf of bread
to the regulation of acavenger wag
ons," and from authorizing the atate
to Issue scrip backed by a half million
appropriation to exempting fraterni
ties from taxation. Bllla Introduced
by Dunne created more Inspectors
than those by any other legislator.
Brown said.
"Rarely waa Dunne's vote recorded
on the side of economy." but he "al
lied himself with the forcea of ex
travagance," Brown stated, and con
tinued by adding that Dunne waa
always to be found with the vested
Interests and running with the pack."
Against Economy
Mentioning certain bills, Brown
aald that Dunne voted against a re
duction In salaries of state officials
for a two-year period; sponsored sal
ary Increase measures, Introduced a
bill to take the eJM) a month maxi
mum limit off the salary of the sec
retary to the public service commis
sioner, supported a bill to create two
additional Judgeahlna In Multnomah
county and to override the govern,
or's veto of the bill.
First a lobbyist
"As a lobbyist and Ice cream man
ufacturer before he became a sena
tor, Mr. Dunne" opposed a bill to
Increase the butterfat content of tee
cream and later as a senator Intro
duced a bill to license large Ice cream
manufacturers S.3S annually and the
email "two or three quart freerer
ofttlmea used by confectioners" 100
annually. Brown declared. He points
out that Dunne favored the IS auto
license fee which charges the man
with a new high-priced car the aame
as the aame car owner with an old
ear.
"Immediately upon the paasage of
the as. license bill an additional 1
cent tax was plased on gasoline. This
additional thrust at the poor man
was energetically championed by tho
genlsl Senator Dunne," nrown said.

Dunne, Brown declared, promised
to vote sgalnat the aslea tax bill
which hart been overwhelmingly de
feated by the people, but Instead he
voted for the sales tax and voted
against referring It to the people at
the May, 1034. primary. The truck
and bue law "so ably championed by
Senator Dunne" Is "his masterpiece."
Brown stated. He termed the bill
one of I he "most vicious hills ever
enacted into law."
Another one of Dunne's bills Is the
milk control bill, nrown stated, with

ment of agriculture, the money rais
ed from a tax on the dairyman's pro
duce. He aald that since the psasse

terially with 65 per cent of the In
crease going to the distributors, Pas
sage of the bill Is termed by Brown

Brown pointed out thst Dunne ap
posed the Orange power hill as he
did other bills where "the ssme
would conflict with the Interests ol
the utilities" He pointed to Dunne's
msuy promises for roads In all parts
of the state, and for "fror.en egns
for Kvigene, gruhstnkes for miners at
Baker and so on and on and on."
