DIVORCE PARTY
MAJIIAN wondered bow Sllrer
would take the ntiws. 8he tried
to recall an; bint ot tragedy during
cbool daya, and or Sllrer' reaction.
Tbere bad been the time SllTBr's
Imported cbow dog bad been run
erer bj a truck. Sllrer bad teemed
more angry at tbe drlrer tban con
cerned orer tbe dog. Marian bad
been the one to carry tbe whimper
ing animal to ber room, summon tbe
veterinarian, then accompany tbe
if to tbe hospital to stand by while
kit foreleg! were put Into casta.
She remembered too that after
the casta bad been removed and the
log mored about with a grotesque
Ump, Sllrer bad discarded him with
t laugh. Oh well, he was happier
through tbe night she relaxed, alept

tbe long ttralgbt row of lights
wblcb marked Reno's thoroughfare.
She n'as wide awake by tbe time tbe
ship bad taxied Into the vast bangar
which opened Into the reception
room.
Henry Marks, the Dispatch corre
spondent, was waiting at tbe door,
and rushed tbem through without
the ceremony ot a greeting.
"Got to step on It." be remarked
as be ushered them Into bis car.
"We're taking the Galena Creek
road orer ML Rose. It's a little rough
and may be slick on tba top side but
we couldn't make It In time by any
other route. Hang on and pray."
Marian understood what be meant
a few moments later. Tbey bad left
tbe Carson blgbway and were rac
ing, It seemed, straight for tbe sky.
She who had ridden lire trucks, po

gripped tbe aide ot the car and hoped
tbe equipage would stay on tbe road,
and she In the car.
AND then she forgot ber tear.

than be bad ever been with her. He
spent serenely glorious days on tbo
Cordon ranch, chasing cotton tails
he could never catch, because his
bop so closely resembled tbelr own.
Perhaps marriage, tour yeart of
living in unity witb another being,
bad taught ber something, softened
her. Husbanda were more Important
tban pets. Yet, Marian believed one
could gauge much of a person's char
acter by their treatment ot animals.
That made ber think of Lon and bis
Hero, tbe big golden blond German
shepherd who rode about wltb blm
when she wasn't In the car. She
must see he wasn't deprived ot hit
rldea. The three ot them could ride
la that wide teat.
They were circling Sacramento
She put ber thougbtt aside like to
many cards at they landed. A mes
senger was waiting for her wltb a
wire. From Bowen probably. She
hesitated a moment before opening
It, then did and read:
"Hondon holding his own.
May last through night. Effect
reconciliation. Bowen."
Marian banded the wire to Estes,
who read It wltb a queer little snort
ot disgust. "He must think you're
Dan Cupid's twin sister," be re
marked. MARIAN smiled, but she was re
lieved that her word to Silver
wouldn't be one of death. She re
laxed, as they took off again, and
when tbe stewardess came with
sandwiches, salad and coffee, found
ber early evening appetite bad re
turned. Refreshed, sbe leaned back, de
termined to enjoy the trip. Dark blue
sky sbove, a laty old moon working
lit way up from the hills below and
ahead of them. Tbe tar Hash ot bea
cons wheeling white raya against
tbe slivered tlpt of the Sierras, or
punctuating the landscape wltb dots
of red and blue.
Somewhere down there waa her
borne. Its planted acrea spread out
like a tattered craty quilt with
pines and redwoods for a fringe. She
wondered If the family would beat
the roar of the ship and remark
"There goes the east bound," nevei
realising sbe was In It.
Lulled by the rush of tbe ship
snow peaked mountains and fringed
with black plnea.
Swiftly tbey dencouded to the
thore, rolled along the road to turn
Into an Imposing grey-stone en
trance and follow the drive to a
large rock and log lodge, around
which were smaller log buildings.
Marks drew up before one of
these, already hedged In wltb parked
cars, and Marian aat looking at It
Behind, tbe mountains reared, pine
and fir covered to the snow line. Be
fore It lay tbe lake. Tor one scant
moment It appeared to be a-ploneer
lodge on the frontier of civilisation.
Bra light flickering on Ita window
panes, smoke curjlng up from tbe
stone chimney.
And then that Illusion was dis
pelled. The door burst open to emit
a scurrying figure and wltb the fig
ure came a blast of radio muslo and
rising above this, shrieks ot laugh
ter and the chant of a song.
"The Battle Hymn of Freedom,"
remarked tbe Reno man.
Marian coked u blm questioning-
ly.
"Mrs. Hondon Is evidently cele
brating ber divorce. Are you going
to need belp. or shall we stay beret"
"I'd better go In alone," answered
Marian, reluctantly. She left the car
slowly, walked acrost the Interred
Ing space between driveway and
cabin, tbe door now closed, and lift
ed her band to rap.
This waa going to be more difficult
than the had supposed. Bad enough
to awaken Silver from sleep to tell
her Cliff waa dying. But this celebra
tion of ber freedom from blml Sbe
doubled her fist and beat ber
knuckles against tbe door. Tbere
waa no response. Sbe tried again,
then realising she couldn't be heard
above the din, opened the door.
She stopped Into the cabin.
"Hl-you, stranger," exclaimed a
lovlal voice.
Marian didn't answer. Her Inter
est wss centered on Silver Hondon
Silver sat perched on the back of an
over stuffed chair, balanced by two
men who were likewise perched on
the arms. Her pale yellow curls bad
been pulled Into a Grecian top knot
Her cheeks flamed like field pop
