Kjudithw I y I jLane arian by .IK.I.V.VK G or liOWMAX don Chapter On COMPLICATED CASE ARIAN GORDON stood at an open window ot tho Morning Dispatch editorial rooms, and looked out on the spring night. Looked down, to be exact. Had she looked out she would have seen tall buildings, inset with yellow oblongs that were windows, and above these the luminous glow of an eve ning sky. Looking down, however, she saw something far more pleasing. On the near street corner, pooled within the circle of a park light, stood Tony Gazetti's flower stand. The stand was a blurred tier of many colors, gold of acacia, jonquil and tulip, deep pink of cyclamen and japonica, purple of violet and hyacinth, and the inevitable splash of orange-red marigold. Behind the stand was tbe trlan gutar city square, botort It, an Im posing looking roadster. Its smootb black surface enhanced wltb sbln Ing chromium-plated flxtr-es. Marian saw neither the stand, the square, nor the automobile. She was watching two men who stood on the sidewalk. She watched Tony Oazettl be cause he was waving his arms. That meant be was talking snd she won dered whs' he could have to say to Lon Casod that would call forth sucb gestures. Once she had focused ber atten tion on Casad. she forgot everything barked the words Lut his grin took away their harshness. "Hear you've been doing good work on this Brown trial. Sorry I hod to be out ot town with that going on. I'd like you to give me your Impression of the whole affair from start to finish." Marian looked at him In conster nation. An Impression of the whole affair . . . that meant a word etching ot the political battle being con stantly wnKod In their city. As the eldost daughter ot a for mer commissioner she had been reared In the political arena. When other etrls were reading Gone Strat- as movie star, If you like that kind of looks. "Meanwhile Jenny was living la an apartment wltb Linda Carlton. Brown's secretary. . "NE noon, while passing a fur- nlture store, Jenny looked to and discovered Linda Carlton and William Brown looking at dining room suites. As their apartment bad a bullt-tn brenkfast-nook and no place for said suite, she knew they weren't planning to buy It as a sur prise for ber. At least not the kind of a surprise she wanted. "That nlgbt Linda came In wear ing an expensive diamond on the third finger of ber left hand. Jenny became suspicious and accused her of stealing William. Linda defiantly admitted she had and she was glad of It. "She said furthermore that they had purchased a home, chosen the furnishings and were going to be married the next week. "Jenny, being modern, didn't go Into a decline. She felt a frenzy com ing on so she went out, walked five miles, then, Bure her temper was 5MS9 Anderson Creek Notice of nnal Settlement, Notice la hereby given that Yvonne Devaney Dugan. He had been waiting for the last hour while he wrote a itory on the afternoon session ot the William Brown briber) trial. He'd bnve to keep on waiting until her city editor reappeared trora where sver be'd disappeared to and told tier she was through for the night. Tony, however, wat benefiting by the wait, for the shelf behind the teat of the car was tilled with cor oucopla shaped packages. Marian knew there would be rlolets, "To ! match your eyes," Lon would say. That was foolish of him. Her eyes j were that nondescript blue which i obligingly took on the shade ot the (rock or bat she wore. And there : would be marigolds, "to match your 1 hair. An atrocious exaggeration : "to match my temper," she always j countered, and ha would laugh. I But then, he'd nevor seen a dls I play of that temper. Slie must see that ha didn't, or he wouldn't laugh ; and he wouldn't wait on street cor ! hers. I "Miss Gordon," a boyish voice In- f terrupted, "tbe M.K. wants you In bis office light away." "Nice to have you back," the said sincerely. "Thanks, Ian, tit down." He ton Porter and Margaret Ward, the had boon ttudylng political econo my. While her school companions attended theaters and dancea, she attended pre-olectlon uot ln-oili..r. making careful note of her fnther'l speeches, and of his opponents. Fortunately for her, her lather's sister bad Intervened and Instead of going to a co-educatlonal college where she might have majored In her father's favorite subject, she tt tended a good girls' school and her Interest had been diverted to litera ture. However, .her knowledge of political factions In nor home city bad made ber 0! value to her editors when she eventually entered the nowspaper field, and It seemed to ber that she was used more for this type of work than for the specie! assignments she preferred. Bowen had lenned back, lighted a cigar and now spoke from the cor ner of his mouth not occupied by the mnntla hemp. "1 alrendy know that William Brown, chief building Inspector, was Indicted by tbe Grand Jury on the charge of having accepted a ten thousand dollar bribe from the Maddern Construction Company, soon after that company bad won the contract for the East Brazos High school building. "I know th faction backing this city commissioner has paid for bis defense. 1 know this, but proving It't another thing. I know our fac tion It trying ltt level best to tond him to the penitentiary. "This William Brown Is handsome under control, returned tnd con gratulated Linda, and William, who had been called to protect Linda from Jenny. They were to delighted nt her good sportsmanship they naked her to be bridesmaid. "She accepted. She helped them move Into their new horn. 8h helped them live In It Eh stuck around to clotely th wat able te learn they were living Ilk royalty on Brown's salary of two hundred nnd fifty month. She set detec tive on William's trail tnd found he wat paying cash for everything tnd that It amounted to much more than his salary. "Jenny began some Investigations of her own.
