Policies of Medford Library Explained to Reading Public To the Editor: (The best of the book production wlU The library wishes to discuss for 1 be at ell times represented. 1 end with the reading public some If, therefore, patrons will express of 1U polices andl problems before their wishes for books either In per- the onset of the winter's work. During the month of August, each can be assured of securing th the quietest month of the year, such j special book desired with the leant. & count of attendance In the read- j possible concern on the part of esc a lng room as staff assistants were J person. If patrons will avail them able to take and care for the regular ; selves of the machinery set up by th work at the desk revealed an average of 365 persons, the highest record for one day being 370. This will Increase constantly until after February, 1935. The highest point reached last year waa an at tendance of M7. This added to 361 children served made a total of 80S people received In the library build ing in one day. There Is every reason to suppose that the high point this coming winter will approach 1000. The 'library believes that people wish to read certain books for cer tain definite reasons. These may or iginate In personal Interests and needs, recommendations of friends, book reviews or advertisements. It one wishes to read Walpole'a "Cap tain Nicholas," one does not want at that particular time Btrlbllng'a "Un finished Cathedral." The scientifical ly minded person, feeling that "Elec trons at Work" will contain Just the thing he needs to know to open up new conceptions of the nature and relation of life and matter, will not be able to put himself In a mood to profit by a reading of Lumley's "Propaganda Menace." Readers who are Interested In John Powys are not Interested In John Ersklne. In a library with so large a cir culation, as the Jackson county li brary, the mathematical laws ot chance make It very unlikely that any specified book will be on the shelves at any given moment. In freely circulating selection of books. a reader might look repeatedly for a given title without finding It. me library believes that the only pos sible way to secure a proper and satisfying relation between books and people Is through a reserve service. It is the Intention to keep the book collection balsnced with something in store for all the needs that arise. For the firs" type, the library keep on the bul letin boarda at the entrance an nouncements and lists of the new books that are added to the book: stock. For the second type, the li brary must offer books not In Im mediate demand and current maga zines. Given a passage of from 2SO to 650 persons per day before a new book shelf, it Is apparent that It la very difficult, especially In thesa close economy of resources, to keep such a shelf attractive at all times. In order to handle the large num ber of reference questions. It has become necessary to withhold soma of the most needed magazines from circulation. There are now about 88 different magazines available for home reading for the current ant) one preceding year. It was also nec essary to have all the tables for th use of readers and current numbers of circulating magazines are now displayed In the alcove on tha west wall of the reading room.
