PAGE FIVE TO LET CONTRACTS Three Jobs On Portland-to-Sea Highways On List Million and- Half Dollars Worth of Work in Sight SALEM, Sept. 14. (P) Three proj ects on the two PortlAnd-to-the-eea highways will be let at the first meeting of the state highway com mission In Portland following ap proval of the Public Works Adminis tration of the alllcatlon of the fed eral 93,100.000 fun da allotted to Ore gon, It was announced today. Bids will be called at once for the ses sion which has been changed to Mon day, October 1. The 3.82 miles of grading on the Wilson River highway, specifically des ignated by the government, will be the first on the llat. This is In Tilla mook county on the De adman creek Brooks section. Two Jobs on the Wolf Creek project, totaling about 14 miles, will also be let. About million dollars' worth of projects will be awarded at the ses sion, to be followed by more than half million dollars more at the sec ond session set for October 11, R. H. Bsldock, state highway engineer, an nounced. Other road projects will be let In Clackamas, Grant, Klamath, Lane and Multnomah counties. Bridges to be constructed will include the large Mllwaukle undercrossing on the Ore gon City -Portland highway. Other spans to be awarded are those over Burnt river on the Baker-Unity high way in Baker county and over Oak creek and Lake creek in Linn county. Storage buildings at Enterprise and Roneburg will also be contracted for The highway projects for which bids will be opened are as follows: Tillamook county Deadman creek- Brooks section of the Wilson Rive; highway, 3.82 miles grading. Clatsop county Necanicum-Elsle section of Wolf Creek highway, 11.28 miles regradlng and surfacing. Clatsop county Ranger station- Elsie section of Wolf Creek highway, 2:53 miles grading. Clackamas county Rock Creek and Eagle Creek secondary highways, 3.6 miles surfacing. Grant county Forest boundary Long creek section of Pen die ton-John Day highway, 17.28 miles surfacing, Klamath county Gold Lake trail- Odell lake section of Willamette high way, 2.84 miles grading. Lane county Portland-Washington county line section of West Side Pa cific highway, 3.3 miles, paving. State Troopers Travelers. OLYMP1A, Wash. (Asso ciated Press Photo. 10 SEE COPCO FILMS A big meeting of the Applecate Grange is slated for tonight at which time an attractive program of Copco movies 'will be the main feature of entertainment. The Oregon Diamond Jubilee and other interesting "Copco Current Events" films will be shown as well as several comedy reels for the chil dren. As an added feature It Is planned to give a pre-view of the films taken last Friday at the Clute hop yards at Applegate, Jackson county's largest hop yards. These pictures, which were taken by H. L. Bromley and Stanley Jones of the California Oregon Power company, show the harvesting of the 1934 crop. The picking, weighing, loading, de livery to the dryers, transfer of the dried hops to the new three-story warehouse, and other activities, prom ise to be of special interest to the Applegate audience. The Grange has announced an open meeting and a large attendance is anticipated. HYDE PARK. N. Y.. Sept. 14. The suggestion was that an Initial group of five four-room houses be built and rented to occupants who would pay the rent from Income re ceived from SERA projects. Land Is available near Albany. (AP) Petitions recently filed with Governor Meier by the "Oregon Retail Alcoholic Bev erage Dispensers," asking that opera tion of the Oregon restaurant code be rescinded, were rejected here to day by Max Gehlhar, state director of agriculture. Gehlhar's order was based on the contention that 76 per cent of the restaurant operators In Oregon lad not signed the petitions which Is the number required to annul the code. He said that 2 625 signatures were required to aunul the code while after deducting duplications and withdrawals the petitions presented by the dispensers organisation con tained only 1,392 signatures. The charge was made by Gehlhar that a large number of the petition ers had signed under misrepresenta tion as to the contents and purposes of the marketing agreement. "It Is apparent that the petitions were circulated by paid circulators of the organization." Gehlhar said, "and that the signers thereof do not rep resent the attitude of any substantial part of the real restaurant Industry of Oregon." Gehlhar attached to his statement a number of signatures. Including the "Beer Bucket." "Big Stein." "Barrel House " and others. (AP) Ninety new fast truck! for speedy transpor tation of troops were received by the Orea-on national guard today. It was announced at the headquarters here by Lieutenant Colonel Joseph V. Schur, quartermaster. The vehicles, purchased by the gov ernment, were recently allotted to Oregon for rapid mobilization of troops. They are of special design and have a high cruising speed. They represent a federal Investment of 75.- 000. The trucks will be kept at the Withycombe rifle range at Clackamas, where the guard has the same num ber of largo slow trucks for hauling equipment.
