OF VITAMIN C TOLD SCIENTISTS Complexion Bleach, Remedy for Haemophilia, Hemor rhages and Pyorrhea Is Most Recent Discovery -x -j; -lrK -Of 'iiwjr ""war MEDFOUD MSIE TRIBUTE. MEDFORD. OREGON, FRIDXY, SEPTEMBER 7, 1934 CURATIV Us m it ii Ji 11 II I ABERDEEN. Scotland, Sept. T fP) lord Raglan, chairman of the an thropological society, who yesterday "aired his belief that before many cen turies have elapsed there will will "not b a single person in America without a certain portion of negro blood," today told the British asso ciation for the advancement of sci ence that popular beliefs are always wrong. He told the convention that It was "quit untrue" that humans were at tracted by opposite and said, "we are really attracted by and marry peo ple like ourselves." It was recalled that Lord Raglan created a stir In last year's convention by debunking the claims of some of England's -best families to Norman blood. Vitamin for Complexion Pure vitamin C, the congress was told, will bleach human complexions darkened by disease. This and other diseases which It was said to cure are certain forms of haemophilia, various types of hemorrhages and pyorrhea. These unexpected medical uses for w the vitamin In Its powerful pure form 7 were described by Professor A. Szent Oyorgyl, one of the leaders In isolat ing the substance. Vitamin C'a magic role first appears tn history when Capt. Cook discover ed that eating citrus fruits would i both prevent and cure the scurvy that made morgues of sailing vessels on prolonged voyages. The vitamin itself was recognized only about a decade ago. Limited Access Until the last two or three years human access to Its benefits had been limited mainly to eating oranges, lem ons, tomatoes, spinach, cabbage, let tuce and some other foods -which con tain It In small, greatly diluted amounts. In 1932 Prof. Szent-Gyorgyl discov ered that ascorbic acid had powerful anti-scurvy properties. The discovery led soon to a general agreement among scientists that ascorbic acid was vitamin C, the anti-scurvy vita min. - The cld has become available for medicine only very recently. Prof. I - Szent-Gyorgyl said, so that Its medl ' cal applications are not yet suffici ently determined but the first clinical medical experiments "have revealed some very striking and unexpected effects. Striking Cures "Ascorbic acid," he aald, "seems to be able to cure in a very striking manner several diseases against which medicine was helpless." Haemophilia, one of these diseases, Is excessive bleeding from even slight est cuts. Well known as an affliction of many male members of Spain's ex royal house, It made Impossible an operation to save the life of Don Gon salo, youngest son of ex-King Alfon so, after an automobile crash In Aus tria. Professor Saent-Gyorgyl said the major part of pathologic pigmenta tions can be made to disappear by the acid. Patients with Addison's disease, which is characterized by brownish pigmentation, r.n be bleached out again, he said. Lack la Provt "These curative effects," the pro fessor commented, "suggest that hu manity is suffering much more grave ly from lack of vitamin C than has j hitherto been supposed." He said that the exact biological role played by the substance la un- TOO LATE 10 CLASSIFY TOR SALE Pine tomatoea, lc on Tines, watermelon.
