Supervisor Janouch stated today that there is no doubt- that the Ap ple gate forest fire was started from a cigarette or match tossed from the Jacksonvllle-Ruch highway. Examina tion of the area has revealed that the fire started at a point 4 miles from Jacksonville and 34 mites from Ruch, one mile south of the Sterling road Junction, where dry grass had been burned in a narrow strip running for some distance along ths road, before spreading in both directions Into the timber. The suppression of the Jackson ville fire, Janouch said. Is one of the outstanding accomplishments of the forest service during the past several years. Seldom has a fire advanced so rapidly, and very exceptionally has a crew succeeded In extinguishing a 5000 -acre blaze In such a short time, he said. Sixty five men havs been left on duty at the fire line, but the Apple gate camp has abandoned Its tem porary quarters on the road. A aurvey to determine the damage will be started as soon as the fire Is completely out, Janouch said. Two thirds of the area was covered with young Douglas fir timber, which was completely destroyed.
