Not warmly friendly, but conveniently o. It was not to be forgotten that be bad lifted her, by the offer of era ployment, out ot a state which bor dered on despair. Her entire worth In this world bad been the five tigers .and the monkey Helen; and Helen. In terms of dollars and centa, would 'hardly, In a country overrun with monkeys, bave fetched the price of la square meal. She was going to work for Bow ers and she must manage to get along with him. But what a ridicu lous situation! Bhe may have been hard and worldly. She could bave .been unflinchingly cruel to a man, or to a woman, even to a child; but ,ln whatever concerned the dumb animals, she waa hypersensitive, and here sbe was engaged to work In close companionship throughout a long voyage with a man who at a cursory examination appeared to be her opposite, a man who delighted In bunting down and slaughtering ; those things which she herself most 'loved to protect and cherish. j As a matter of fact, they were .more nearly opposltea than she sus pected. If Bowera was ever unkind to a man or a woman or a child, It was by accident; and even If It was de served, it waa an unklndness which be bad no power to sustain. From cave-dwelling ancestors, perhaps, be had Inherited tbe in stinct to hunt down and kill those animals which must have made the 'lives of tbe cave-dwellers a long hor rible nightmare. He killed without compunction or remorse, but he had isever killed an elephant or a mon key. He never would. And he was rather foolish about dogs. His most remote ancestors, per haps, bad lived In trees. Those more recent ones, who bad dwelt In caves, bad perhaps domesticated the ele phant and the dog. He never took the trouble to reason these things out. They were Instincts. He could not see a lion or a tiger without an itch to put a bullet through Its head. ' But under the circumstances Bowers found It In his heart to wish that his success aa a bunter bad not made him so very well known. Ivy ;Oreen attracted him more and more. He had perhaps underestimated her good looks. It waa a pity that they had so little In common, that their respective Interests and bobbles. In deed, made them antagonistic to ;each other. At the time, ahe was fifteen years ot age and firmly de termined not to starve to death Bowers got the Impression that some kind Dutchman bad taken cnr of her for a year or two. Most trainers preferred to work with Hons; but naturally In India and Malaysia, where these are not Indigenous, you had to work with tigers and leopards or nothing. Ooralkln'a had been a mlied troupe, tlgera and leopards; but the species are not happy together and she had gradually eliminated the latter. Bhe wlsbed that Bowers could bave seen her tigers. She had known bow to keep their coats beau tiful and their dispositions calm. One, an old tigress named Maudle, had been a love of a thing, always flln.ilng herself down to be tickled and petted. Ivy Green bad been so sure of Maudle's good manners that she had sometimes taken ber for a walk through the main street ot a native town. "When the villagers saw us com ing," she said, "It was fun to ses them disappear." She laughed a lit tle at the recollection, then sudden ly frowned. "And then there was this Matassorl business." BOWERS asked her about It II was the usual thing, apparently. Business bad not been good and while there had still been a little money In the cash-box, Sefior Matas sorl had thought best to bave It all for himself. Ivy Green was under the Impres sion that she might have shared tba money with him as Slgnora Matas sorl It she had ever given him any encouragement But he had been, II seemed, a detestable. Italian, fat and greasy. Once, the worse foi liquor, be had tried to force his at tentions on ber. She had wrenched free and managed to open Maudle'i cage. Maudle loved nothing so much as to be Invited out for a romp. Tbe moment you started to fiddle with the fastenings of her cage door ths anticipation ot immediate and de lightful pleasures caused her ta open her vast moutb ss wide as po slhle, and to roar tremendously. Tbe effect upon anyone not inti mately acquainted with her disposi tion, waa disquieting. As Maudle came roaring out of tbe cage, Sefior Matassorl fled howling from the tent He had never renewed bis moles tations. He bad leered and ogled and hluted. but he had not dared to touch her. Sbe had told him that If he ever laid hla banda on her again, be would bave the worst kind ot tiger trouble. She would loose them all, all five of them, and ala them on him, just as If they had been Ave highly trained police dogs. And be believed youf" asked Bowers. No." said Ivy Green, ."and again yes. He wasn't sure." Bowers chuckled. "What was the truth of tbe matter!" be asked. The truth! If I'd turn them loose. some of them might have run amok. but I wouldn t bave been allowed to choose the victims." She asked him about McLeod's shipment and of Just what It con sisted. The town, a result of establishment of a new irrigation system In the Boqullla dam area, now has 3000 in habitants, according to J. V. Rlvero, federal agricultural agent In Juarez. Rlvero said that 120.000 acres have been brought Into cultivation and that anyone may purchase land there from the government on easy terms 10 per cent down and the rest over a period of 30 yeara. Cotton, wheat, grapea and fruit are among the products to be raised near Lss Deliclas. ANCIENTIISFOiD LENINGRAD (UP) An archaeolo gical expedition aent out by the Soviet Academy of Science to explore ancient ruins In the northern Caucaaua haa returned here after making some val uable discoveries. The archaeologists found 39 graves of ancient men, many utensils, old cotna, beada and weapons. Some of these objects date bock as far as the 4th Century, B. C. 4 P. W. Aug. 20 (UP) Artificial respiration, applied to young bear and deer which fall Into Manson flume, above Lake Chelan, re vives about 75 per cent. Game Pro tector A. E. Schaller reported. A patrol crew along the concrete canal rescues about 40 animals a year, Schaller said. Most are fawns, with an occasional bear cub. The young stera fall in when they attempt to fol low their mothera In a leap across. A 15-mlle current sweeps them away, although the water la only three feet deep. The artificial respiration In most cases revives the animals within an hour so they are able to run off into the hills again, Schaller said. It la applied In much the same manner aa to human beings.
