It was declared at the hearing there was a surplus In the textbook fund while shortages of books existed in various school rooms. The hearing assumed proportions of a community spectacle as large crowds gathered to hear testimony. How the girl mother re pays her debt of gratitude in the thrilling climax of a story replete with thrills, Including a steeplechase, lu which the girl is hurled from her horse and an airplane crash at sea. Pinto Colvig On Craterian Stage Next Thursday A home town boy who has made pod in a big way comes to Med ford next Thursday to appear on tho stage of the cratertan theater with the Cagney-O'BrJ&n picture, "Here Comes the Navy," on the screen. Pinto Colvig, who, for the last few years, has been with the Walt Dis ney studio In Hollywood, Is return-. !og to the scenes of hi boyhood, where as he says "he first learned 1 to spit like a grasshopper." It was Colvig whose voice was heard In the recent Disney Silly Symphony, "The Grasshopper and the Ant," singing "The World Owes Ma a Living." Lately, Colvig has been broadcast ing over national networks with Ray mond Paige and his orchestra, tell ing how sound effects are worked Into the cartoons and Illustrating with the airplane effects on a slide trombone, cow moos on a clarinet, bark like Pluto (Mickey Mouse's ca nine pal), motor boat effects on a derby hat, and many others. He has just had a renewal on hla contract with Walt Disney and Is taking a short vacation to Med ford to help celebrate JudgeColvlg's 00th birthday, and while here will be on the atago of the Craterian theater with an act composed of the various knick-knacks and doo-dads that he does at the stu dios and over the radio. (p) An attempt to burn over the upper Hub bard Creek area, IS miles northwest of Roaeburg yesterday failed when BO fire fighters from the Melroee CCO camp after an all night battle re ported this morning that they have the blaze under control. The fire Is said to have burned over about 00 acres of timber lands. Three fires, about a quarter of mile apart, were set out Friday, the exact anniversary of a similar attempt a year ago. Last year two attempts were made to start a forest fire In that section.
