Commander Hayes In Ad

Calls On Citizens to Up
hold Government, Liberty
ASTORIA. Aug. 24. (AP) Edward
A. Hayes, American Legion national
. commander, today called on Legion
naires to form a bulwark of protec
tion against "communist io menace"
and "radical element."
Addressing the Oregon department
Legion convention which Is devoting
much attention to communism, the
national commander, tall Decatur,
111., attorney, called upon all citizens
to uphold our government and pre
eerve liberty.
Red Movement Been.
The Legion Is "not hunting a 'red'
behind every bush," he said, but
recognizes a "definite communistic
movement In the United States, and

la making war upon the radical teach-;
lnga that exist.
He called on the men and women
who fought to preserve our govern
ment" to make peace-time effort
against "radical elements which are
teaching strange tenet and advocat
ing a tearing down of those funda
mental principles upon which our
nation has progressed."
Strange Tenets Spreading.
"We cannot Ignore the fact," he
said, "that in our schools. In our
colleges. In our churches, and our
social organisations even In govern
ment circles, strange tenet are
spreading."
He told of student anti-war activi
ties In a number of state and re
ferred to what he called a subversive
article published In the Epworth Her
ald and written by the secretary of
the Methodist Federation of Social
Service.
The article, he asld, gave young
Christians a suggestion that they
could jon the army In the event of
war and commit sabotage. Hayes said
the article suggested the youth could
go further and Join other youths in
sabotage with a deliberate Intent to
get rid of the present economic sys
tem, of which wsr was declared
part.
Says Author Communist,
'We looked up the author of this
article, this secretary of the Metho
dist Federation of Social Service, and
found her listed In connection with
communistic activities," Hayes de
clared. Speaking of war benefit payments.
Haves declared veteran were placed
in a class of handicap by service to
their flag during the war and the
Legion seeks "only to bring them to
the level of those who did not serve
In the great war."
The legion Is seeking enactment of
a universal war time service measure
which would embrace common re
sponsibility for all citizens, capital
and resources.
"It will be a guarantee of peace,'
he said, "because no man or group of
men would seek to foster war In the
hope of making plain money out of
it."
