Aug. 24. (AP) Edward A. Hayes, American Legion national . commander, today called on Legion naires to form a bulwark of protec tion against "communist io menace" and "radical element." Addressing the Oregon department Legion convention which Is devoting much attention to communism, the national commander, tall Decatur, 111., attorney, called upon all citizens to uphold our government and pre eerve liberty. He told of student anti-war activi ties In a number of state and re ferred to what he called a subversive article published In the Epworth Her ald and written by the secretary of the Methodist Federation of Social Service. The article, he asld, gave young Christians a suggestion that they could jon the army In the event of war and commit sabotage. Hayes said the article suggested the youth could go further and Join other youths in sabotage with a deliberate Intent to get rid of the present economic sys tem, of which wsr was declared part. Says Author Communist, 'We looked up the author of this article, this secretary of the Metho dist Federation of Social Service, and found her listed In connection with communistic activities," Hayes de clared. Speaking of war benefit payments. Haves declared veteran were placed in a class of handicap by service to their flag during the war and the Legion seeks "only to bring them to the level of those who did not serve In the great war." The legion Is seeking enactment of a universal war time service measure which would embrace common re sponsibility for all citizens, capital and resources. "It will be a guarantee of peace,' he said, "because no man or group of men would seek to foster war In the hope of making plain money out of it."
