Brheen, former Ashland resident, sentenced to serve 18 months upon his plea of guilty to participa tion In the Jackson county ballot thefts, Is scheduled to ba released from state prison next week. Bre cheen was sentenced August 7, last, and earned time off for good be havior. He Is the second of the bal lot theft defendants to walk out the front gate of the penitentiary. The first, Wesley McKlt trick, was granted 'parole. .f Brecheen Is scheduled to go to the t r ... tits release. He has told prison at taches, local authorities have been Informed, "I never want to see Jack eon county again." Brecheen, before running afoul of the law, was & resident for two years In Ashland, where he engaged In small realty business. He was a Journey man solicitor for registered voters at 30c per name, in the 1933 campaigns, and did a good Job. During the Banks-Fehl turmoil he was a star boarder of the county and made humorous speeches at "Grand Asaem. . biles." He claimed a "personal friendship with President Roosevelt for 25 years. When Indicted for vote stealing, he could not be found until an official searcher happened to look in the woman's ward of the county Jail, where Brecheen was reading and tak ing his ease, g Evidence In the trials showed that ; Brecheen was present at all the vote stealing plot tings, and when the atcual crime was committed stood on the south side of the courthouse, smoking his pipe and predicting, "something Is going to happen." Cardinal Comes. NEW YORK. Aug. 3. (p) Ordinal Alesslo Leplcler, prefect of the con gregation of religious orders of the Catholic church, arrived from Italy today on the liner Conte dl Savola. Miss Smith Spends Three Days at Lake Miss Helen Smith returned yester day from a three-day visit at Lake o' the Woods, where she stayed at the summer home of Mrs. Fred Kin kald and daughters, Florence and June, of GlendaJe. Cal. Miss Smith also visited with France Smith and Jame O'Donahue of Butte Fall. Groceteria Employes Go Swimming at By be Thirty-two employes of Economy Groceteria No. 3 motored to By bee bridge on the Rogue last night and enjoyed several hours of picnicking and swimming. The party arrived at the river at 6 o'clock, and after dis patching a Dutch lunch and keg of beer, spent the evening swimming, with some of the men engaging in wrestling matches on the beach. Circle Holds Regular Meeting A regular meeting of the Chrysan themum circle No. 87, Neighbors of Woodcraft, was held last evening at 8 o'clock in the I. O. O. F. hall. They will visit at the Tucker aummer home for a week, having arrived this morning from the south. Nebraska Club To Give Plrnle The Nebraska club will give a pic nic Sunday, August 10, in Uthla park, Ashland. Anyone who was born or has lived In Nebraska may attend and will be welcomed by the club. BUTTE CREEK BRIDGE The county court and, county engineer today are Inspecting a bridge over he South Pork of Little Butte creek, near Mra. Tonn's place. Thai bridge Is at the end of Its usefulness and will have to be replaced at ft cost of f 2000. The county engineer reports It la apt to fall down and la no longer strong enough to hold heavy or continued traffic.
