KLAMATH PALLS, July 28. (AP)
A spectacular fire on the outskirts
of Keno, tiny community west of
glsmath Fells on the road to Ash
land, was brought under control
during the nlgnt. Forty men work
ing constantly until dawn turned the
blaze sway from farm homes, crops
and valuable timber.
Starting as a brush fire Friday
afternoon, the flamea raced along a
seven-mile front between Worden and
Keno. A brisk wind brought the con
' flagratlon to within three-quarters of
a mile from the highway community

back along the previous burn.

The heat from the blaze alone was
sufficient to spread the fire to fields
at a distance of several yards.
All through the night Klamath
Falls was covered by a haze of smoke
but this morning the atmosphere
cleared as the fire was placed In con
trol. No further danger was expected un
less an unfavorable wind developed.

PALAHATCHTE, Miss.. July 28.
(AP) The whipping to death of
Henry Bedford, a negro born in alave
days, sent anger surging through this
little town today.
Four white men, accused of mur
der were hurried to Jail at Brandon
last night. Sheriff Vlrden Therrlll
of Rankin county, who made the ar
ret, aald he had delayed prelimi
nary hearings because feeling was
running high.
The negro had been known to
almost every resident here for years.
Alex Murray, John Scales and Benny
Cawthome, all of Pelahatchle, and M.
M. Dotson. of Shlloh, were under ar
rest. They were denied bond, pend
ing hearing next Wednesday.
Cawthorne charged the negro, ft ten.
nt of his father, D. W. Cawthorne,
talked "disrespectfully" when they
disputed ft rental agreement.
The sheriff said the men took the
70-yoar-old negro to a secluded spot
outside the town Wednesday and
whipped him with a heavy leather
strap.
The sheriff said he was notified of
1 the beating five hours later and went
Vlo the scene with Cawthorne and ft
doctor.
He said the negro was lying on the
ground, unable to move, and although
he was taken Into town and given
medical treatment, he died that night.
SLOT RACKETEERS
PORTLAND, July 28. ( AP) Two
slot machine distributors, Royden H.
Enloe and Earl Wurzweller, sentenced
to six months In Jail for assault and
battery, were free today after having
served only two months of their
sentences.
The two were released Friday aft
ernoon on conditional pardons ex
tended by Oovernor Meter.
Enloe and Wurzweller were con
victed of assault on Clyde S. Betts.

Wurzweller's establishment to return.

In extending the pardons, the
governor said the action was taken
on recommendation of Circuit Judge
Kanzler, the committing magistrate.
The supreme court, upholding the

scribed the assault on Bette as "ft
most cowardly and brutal beating."
District Attorney Langley opposed
clemency and spoke of the acts of
the convicted men as "acts of gangsterism."
No Fair Exhibit.
PORTLAND, July 28. (AP) Plans
for an Oregon exhibit at the Century
of Progress exposition In Chicsgo this
year have been abandoned by the
Chamber of Commerce here. A cam
paign to raise funds to finance the
exhibit has netted only 81690. This
money will be returned.
