elephant which roamed southern
Oregon rer 800,000 year ago were
unearthed three miles southwest of
Jacksonville, on the old Miller Clutch
property, by J. T. Brewer last Thurs
day when he atarted work on a gold
mine.
Professor V. M. nuaaong, who ox
a mined th bonea now on exhibition
at Mr. Brewer'a home, 737 South Cen
tral, said he believes the specimens
to belong to a apeclea known as ele
phaa oolumbr. which Inhabited this
region during the glacier period.
Brewer made the discovery tn a bed
of bin clay about tn feet unler
th surface, and aatd the bonee were
apparently a part of a complete akele
ton which crumbled for the most part
into dirt when expoeed. The remains,
he aald, extended over an area about
33 feet long.

Loa Angelea alone, while no fig
urea were available, appeared to pro
fit from the walkout. Much of the
shipping that would have normally
gone to other ports waa diverted
there because of the "open port"
conditions maintained. Los Angelea
Steamship company officials report
ed losses, however, due to the high
cot of non-union worker under
strike condition. No eatlihates were
available.
Eight men have been fatally In
jured during disorders two at Los
Angeles, two at Seattle, three at San
Francisco and one at Portland-
while hundreds have been
otherwise Injured.

At a meeting of th directors of the
Fruitgrowers league held last week
unanimous endorsement to the re
cently organized' Jackson County Co
operative was given It was announced
yesterday.
It Is th purpose of th Cooperative
organization to serve all farmers, or-
chardiata and producers of agricultural
products and livestock and the only
requisite to become a member of th
cooperative 1 to be an actual pro
ducer of agricultural products.
Articles of Incorporation for the
new Jackson County Cooperative have
been prepared this week and sent to
Salem and the Incorporators are: A. E.
Brock way, J. B. Kirk, Dick Strauss.
Cbas. A. Wing, and Leonard Carpen
ter. Arrangement were completed yes
terday for the establishment of an of
fice at 317 Liberty building which will
be opened for business on Tuesday
morning next.
The cooperative movement started
July 9th in this county with a meet
ing of prominent and interested farm
era for the purpose of taking advan
tage of a favorable gas. oil, and oil
products price for agricultural pro
ducers, which la In accord with the
federal code covering cooperatives.
The local organization will be af
filiated with the parent cooperative
known as the Pacific Supply Coopera
tive of Portland, of which at the pres
ent time there are thirty-four unit's
tn Washington. Oregon, and Idaho.
It la believed by those responsible
for sponsoring the organization here
that a considerable saving can be af-1
fected to farmers and orchardlsta and
present indication are that a large
membership will be signed up within
a very short time In Jackson county.
Those Interested are asked to com
municate with the office of the or-
ganlzatlon after Tuesday next when
complete Information regarding Its
operation will be given by those In
charge.
It 1 pointed out that one of the
advantages of the cooperative la that
the gas and oil products are delivered
to the farm and ranches thus assur
ing up to date and expeditious service.

Butter, Eggs Steady
as Trade Resumes

Local butter and egg markets were
steady at the week'a close with no
change In prices on either. The
movement of butter to the San Fran
cisco market from local distributors
has been resumed, some shipments
having gone south by truck. The
egg market continued firm here at
the week's price levels. Top quality I
was In best demand but undergrades j
were fairly firm also.
