Seven Killed Outright
Seven of the victims were killed
outright as the plant, In which pow
der, used chiefly for clearing stumps
and other agricultural purposes was
made, shot skyward. Three others,
badly mangled, died on the way to
the St. Peter's hospital here, or soon
alter arriving.
From Frank Skinner, who was
working on a road a half mile away
from the scene, came a description or
the blast,
"It knocked us all on our backs.
At first, I thought a terrible earth
quake had rocked, the country. But
.-( as I looked up I saw a great cloud
that looked like a sandstorm reach
ing a quarter of a mile Into the air.
"Then it settled slowly, and In Its
place big red tongues of flame shot
sky we rd.
Wife at Plant
"I felt a sickening sensation as I
knew what had happened the p tra
ded plant had blown up! My wife,
Peggy, was working there."
His wife miraculously survived the
blast, however, although a companion
working near her, Mrs. Eppley, was
among the victims.
Because of the fearful destructive
seas of the explosion, plant officials
said today that Its exact cause might
never be known.

women and brought Injuries to two

KLAMATH FALLS, June 38. (AP)
Dr. O. E, Helnrlch, Berkeley crimi
nologist, will receive $763.43 from
Klamath county In connection with
his Investigations Into the Horace
M. Manning case here recently.
The amount the county Is willing
to pay Is about one-third the bill
the criminologist submitted for pro
fessional services and materials. He
asked $2362.48 for his activities on
behalf of the prosecution.
Manning, prominent attorney, was
acquitted on a plea of self defense
for the shooting of Ralph Hornn, his
former law partner and member of
the state legislature.
Helnrlch was the key witness for
the state. The photograph of a fin
gerprint on one of the two guns
taken from the death room was of
fered as evidence but later was
identified as one accidentally placed
there by the expert.
Both state and defense attorneys
believed the Incident materially re
duced the strength of the prosecu
tion's case.

4:46 p. m. and arriving here at 12:05
a. m.
