ATLAKEO' WOODS TO OPENJULY 8 Ideal Location for Boys' Camp Many Activities Offered Life Guards and Other Supervision Given Camp McLaughlin, the boy scout ummer camp for the acouta of the Crater Lake Area council, will open Sunday, July 8, for two two-week period!. The camp, on the north eaat shore of Lake of the Woods, b Ideal for a boya' oamp. offering al most every advantage one could wish for. During the two week the acout la In camp be la kept busy with many activities, swimming, boating, games, evening camp fire sessions, hiking, and instruction In general camp craft and acoutcraft. Scout camp offera aplendld opportunities for the devel opment of the acout physically, men tally and morally. He learns to do things for himself. Housed in Cabins. The boys are housed in large screened cabins In which are Indi vidual spring cots, The camp will be divided Into three troops, "Mountalneere," "Plo. neers," and "Life Guards." This dl' vision makes possible Interesting competition between troops In games and activities. The "Mountaineers' and "Pioneers" are open to all acouta. The requirements for a boy to be In the "Life Guard" unit are that he be at least a first olaas scout. The program of the "Life Ouard" unit will center around the water activities. Scouts desiring to receive Instruction and complete their swim ming and life saving merit badge work should be In thla troops. Bob Haines, registered acout life guard and aenlor Bed Cross llfesaver, will have charge of the swimming and life-saving activities. He Is an Eagle scout and has had considerable training In water front safety. . The 'other leaders of the camp will assist the water front director in making the water front aafe. Both the buddy and check systems will be used In order to keep check on all acouta while In the water or swimming area. Life guards will be on duty during the swimming periods at various points where they' may be ready to render help If needed. It Is expected that a large number of acouta will compete their swimming and life saving merit badgea during their atay at camp. Special Swim Classes Special claases are held each day for boys learning to swim or dearlng to increase their swimming ability. During the past year 17,104 aeoute were taught to awlm in aoout campe throughout the United States. A acout desiring to learn to swim will find that attendance at aoout camp provides the best opoprtunlty for this Instruction. Raymond Srlckson, life scout of Troop No. 8, will have charge of the handicraft department. Sooute will have the opporunlty to make pack boards and various articles In leather work. Raymond has been making advance preparations and promises the soouts an Interesting activity for their leisure moments at camp. Dick Roberts, Sagle aoout, will have charge of scout advancement. The oamp offers the beat of facilities and condition for receiving Instruction In the passing of acout requirements. It Is expected that a large number of boya will complete merit badge and first class and second class ranks. A court of honor will be held on the second Sunday of eaoh period, at whloh time recognition will be given to those soouts who have com pleted the various ranks of scouting. Plan Campfire Program. Bob Rlndt will have oharge of the camp store and the oampflre programs. The campfire Is the high spot In many scouts summer oamp experience, and considerable time Is being given In the careful planning of the evening program, so that the campfire sessions will ba made Inter esting and attractive. Prank Nelson, as cook, promises to satisfy the appetltlea of the scouts. This Is Mr. Nelson's third season aa cook for the boy acouta at Camp l'o Laughlln, He haa established quite a reputation as cook and the boys are all looking forward to his splen did meals. The camp menu Is worked out In advance and Is planned so that the scouts will have ample fresh fruit, vegetables and milk. Stuart Forbes, life scout of Troop j no. as, win nave cnarge or ins din ing room. D. F. Parker, who It a medical stu dent of the University of Oregon, and has had oonstlderable work In connection with hospitals, will be the camp doctor. He la well quali fied to look after the health of the acouta. All scouts are taking a med ical examination prior to leaving for camp for the purpose of determining their physical condition. Soderberg Director. Scout Executive A. O. Soderberg will be the ramp director. He has j been connected with the Portland summer camp for the past eleven years. A number ot the scoutmas ters will also be In camp with their troops to assist In ths leadership and Instruction. The scout executive urges all scouts to take advantage of eummer camp, as an experience that no scout should miss. When boys reach the scout age they perhaps will have only one or two seasons In which they may enjoy the experience at a scout camp. In two or three years they will have reached the age where It Is necessary for them to as sume the responsibility ot making their own way and perhaps help to provide at home. When this time comes, experience at scout csmp Is past. Parents are urged to make posslbls a two-weeks stay at camp for their sons before It Is too late. A number ot scouts have already signed UP for one or two periods at camp.
