PROBE DEATH OF
BEAGLE 'SUICIDE'
evidence la tho death of Jesele May
Cook, 45, will be presented to the
grand Jury, Floyd Ross, foreman, for
whatever action It may see fit dur
ing tho aeeston which starts next
Tuesday, June 30, District Attorney
Codding said today.
The body of Mrs. Cook was found
beneath a tree near her home In the
Beagle district March 3 last. Circum
stance pointed strongly to suicide
and the coroner's Jury returned a
verdict to that effect. The district
attorney said the case would be dis
cussed with the grand Jury and If It
desired to hear witnesses they would
be called.
Settlement of the estate of Mrs.
Cook, a well-known resident of the
valley, has been under way for some
months.
There are close to a dozen cases to
be presented to the grand Jury, In
cluding a number of liquor viola
tions. Jonathan Richardson and Bernlce
Kennedy, charged with larceny from
the person, are also scheduled for
Investigation. The pair are alleged
to have picked the pockets of a Jack
sonville miner outside a North Pa
cific highway beer resort during Ju
bilee week and removed 40. One
of the women posed as Intoxicated
and thus won the sympathy and
confidence of the miner who, while
endeavoring to render first aid, al
legedly lost his wallet.
E. h. Fitch, held in the county Jail
on a criminal libel charge for the
circulation or campaign pamphlets,
allegedly Inspired by the prisoner,
Earl H. Fehl, and May Murray, simi
larly accused and at liberty on $1000
ball, are also scheduled for grand
Jury action.
It la expected that the grand Jury

FORAGE PENSION
Within the past week six new ap
plications' for old age pensions have
been filed with the county court, act
ing as a pension board. The num
ber of old age pensions granted now
totals 157. There has been a decline
In the number of applications the
past six weeks..
The average amount paid each pen
sioner Is between 11 and 12, which
Is slightly higher than In most Ore
gon counties where the pensions are
granted. A number of counties have
not yet started payments owing to
depleted state of finances.
In this county all applications have
been checked extensively end a num
ber rejected because the applicant did
not come under the provisions of the
old age pension law as to age, length
of residence In the state, or had chil
dren able to provide for them. A
number of applications await signing
of property reimbursement assign
ments. The law requires that if an
old person owns more than $3000
worth of property he agree to assign
it to the count.
