BERKELEY, Calif., June 30. (UP) The common cold apparently is not Infectious; It la csused by environ ment and general body responses, not bacteria germs, the American Assocla. tlon for the Advancement of Science was told todsy. Dr. Wlulsm J. Kerr and Dr. John B. Legen of the University of Cali fornia described the results of expert' ments on the transmlsslblllty of the common cold. The experiments tend to absolve the bacteria germ of blame, they said. Changing environment and the gen eral adaptability of the body may also cause other diseases of the lower res piratory tract, auch aa laryngitis, bronchitis and even pneumonia, they said. Evidence against an infectious origin of colds Includes frequent re currence of the cold In susceptible Individuals, Its seasonal occurrences, and the absence of fever In early stages. Excessive cooling power of the air at times when skin pores are open from exertion or fatigue probably cause the bothersome disease, the ex perimenters said. Attempta to Infect a number of men susceptible to colds failed.
