A NO FUEL CAN FOOL THIS KNOCK TESTER 1 -4 V -jJJ ml Octane, a word familiar to all motorlata. la BtUl a mratcrr 1o moat, petro leum arlentlftta bellere. Above la ahown a leatlnjr engine In General Petrolenm'a laborntortea med to determine the exact octane value of a vaaollne. Yon can't fool thla machine for Ita mlaaloa In lite la to knock. Octane is a word familiar to all motorists, yet few know its real meaning, in the opinion of the majority of petroleum sci entists. Some people think it refers to a substance, others to a measure of anti-knock value, Both are to a certain extent right, but few of them are sure just how right they are, or why. Explains Term To make the term and its ap plication to gasoline clear to its retail salesmen, General Petro leum Corporation, producers and distributors of General Mobilgas, . has prepared a printed explanation for its em ployees. Gasoline, the brochure points out, is a mixture of many different hydrocarbons, and these hydrocarbons in turn are various combinations of hydro gen and carbon. Scientists have theoretically isolated many of these different combinations. One of them is known as "oc tane" and contains eight parts of carbon and eighteen parts of hydrogen. Iso-Octane These parts of carbon and hydrogen may be grouped in different arrangements, one of which is known as "Iso Octane". It is this synthetic product which is used as a standard by which to measure the anti-knock value of a gaso line. Because of its hu?h anti knock tendency, Iso-Octane is arbitrarily assigned the number 100, while another hydrocarbon belonging to the heptane fam ily, containing seven parts car bon to sixteen parts hydrogen and which has a very low anti knock value, is given the num ber 0. To determine the octane val ue of a gasoline, the fuel is burned in a carefully standar dized testing engine such as General Petroleum has in its Vernon laboratories. By refer ence to the behavior of octane, scientists can say this gasoline, (the one they are testing) knocks just as much as a theo retical fuel composed of, say, 68 parts of octane and 32 parts of heptane. In other words, the gasoline would have an octane value of 68, which is nothing more or less than its anti-knock rating. Octane Numbers The use of an octane number with reference to gasoline, the brochure emphasizes, does not mean that the fuel contains that percentage of octane, but mere ly refers to the anti-knock value of the gasoline as measured by this scale which is called oc tane numbers. General Mobil gas, it was pointed out, has one of the highest octane ratings oi any non-premium gasoline on the market- RIGID TESTS IN EXTREME CLIMATE With lta new product completed and ready for distribution, Socony approached the question of practical teata, according to W. F. Carper, lubri cating engineer for the General Petro leum corporation In Portland. At Lake Placid, New York. In the heart of the famous Adirondack mountains, and again at Moose Harbor in the noted. Hudfon Bay region. In sub-zero temperatures, the new product, new Mob II 01 i, went through every form of practical and competitive demonstra tion that automotive engineer could devlae to positively prove Its fluidity. Its resistance to extreme cold. It not only passed every requirement, but was found to excel any competitive oil on the market. In the searing, scorching heat of Defith. Valley, California, the new oil again met every requirement and sui passed the performance of all com petltlve products. For example, with the thermometer steadily above 120 degrees F., one car, with radiator re moved, ran continuously for ten hours with no cooling agent but Moblloll. Throughout the United States the Socony Vacuum test fleet, consisting of many different makes of cars, put the new product through lta paces, and without exception reported re sults far tn excess of many other motor oils on the market. Aeroplane transportation Is becom ing more and more common every day. A modern oil must meet the requirements of this modern trans portation. A fleet of test planes tried the new oil for speed, endurance, consumption, operation, under dif ferent temperatures and every other condition and the oil was pronounced perfect. Today's speeds give motor oil 9 times the beating It took three years ago. Substantial Gain In General Volume The substantial gain In gasoline sales for the General Petroleum cor poration In Oregon during recent months Is attributed to the energetic co-operation of Independent dealers, as well as company owned operations by District Manager Hlgglns In a statement today. State statistics show that General Petroleum has shown a larger percentage gain than any other company during the past few months, Mr. Hlgglns said, and this splendid record is a tribute to both Independent dealers and company stations.
