June 18 With the arrival of some 3000 mem bers of the Oregon National Guu.la. assembled from all part of Oregon, her yesterday, a training period of 15 daya will awing Into progress. Under the command of Major-General Oeorge A. White, extensive train ing in the line of actual warfa-v tactics will be given to the brigade. Scouting, patroltng, guard and riot duty, are to be some of the many thing which the training will ove:. After arriving In camp yesterday, around 11:30, members of "A" com pany spent the remainder of the day erecting tenta. making bunks, and cleaning up in general. Some trouble waa experienced in securing enough straw to fill the bed tlckd, but after trading around here and there, the men finally managed to have them filled. Weather conditions here at Clatsop, are Ideal, with a clear sky prevail ing, and a light breeze to keep on from perspiring. As far known, no Illness has been reported. With the exception of Richard Baize, bugle:, everyone Is in fine fettle, and noth ing unusual has happened. The newer i recrulta experienced sort of a thrill when arriving In camp. Under the ; impression that the hike from the train was 10 miles long, feigned wear iness passed through the ranks, but after walking a few blocks, the sud den appearance of the tents put new life into them. Camp life in Clatsop consists of three "phaaea" of the day. drill, de tail and "bunk fatigue." Drill is con ducted for seven hours a day. three and one-half hours in the morning, and the same in the afternoon. De tails are formed on the moment and consist of bringing wood for the tents, kitchen "police." sweeping and other things. Over half the day the guards. man has to himself. Automatic rifle schools have start ed today, and camp life has begun in earnest. IL DUCE EXCITED BY HITLER TALK ROME. Italy, June 18. The return visit will be made probably in October, and the two statesmen will meet In Munich and In Obersalzberg, where Hitler has his summer home. LOCHNER. BERLIN. (AP) The return of th Saar basin to Germany has become the all -absorbing aim of German for eign policy. Disarmament Is for the moment s poor runner-up. The Austrian con flict, the Danublan customs union, the Germ an-Polish rapprochement) are mere also-rans as far as public dlcusslon goes. Incidentally, those on the lnalde admit, when pressed, that the fat of the Saar will be settled, not In Berlin nor In Paris nor In Geneva, but In Vatican City. Religious Freedom Factor. For, so long as Pope Plus and Adolpr Hitler fall to agree on Inter pretation of the concordat, the Saar baaln Is a valuable stake In the hands of the Holy See. , Of the 800.000 Inhabitants In this closely packed area of 737 square) miles, 560.000 are Roman Catholics. j They are, for the past part, not mer uatnoncs in name, Dut devout church goers. Unless they are assured that they will have religious freedom if they Join the nacl fatherland, they may decide to vote for continuing the government by a League of Nations commission. . That would be such a blow to Ger man prestige that It Is conceivable) that Hitler may deem It wise to come to an acceptable arrangement with the Holy See before the plebtactte) takes place. If Vatican City passes out word In favor of the Shot's rejoining Ger many, the last doubt as to how the plebiscite might go la removed In the German mind. Refugee Voters Few. The 700 odd emigres of anti-Hitler persuasion who fled to the Saar ba sin ennnot affect the result, compe tent observers say, especially a they apparently are not entitled to vote In the plebiscite. The Germans hold that only persons who lived In the Saar In 1020, when It was turned over to a league commission, may vote. The German authorities are com piling lists of those who quit the Saar region after 1019 and who now are scatttered over the world. All who are willing to go back to their homes for the plebiscite are to be given transportation. Within the Saar, all parties ex cept the Socialists and Communists have merged in a "Deutsche Front. According to an official statement, '4.05.174 of the 489.400 who are en titled to vote In the plebiscite an firmly organized." "No Compromise Goeb bell. To show the world how determined the Saar Germans are for the reun ion, Hitler sent Joseph Goebbells, minister of propaganda to Zwel brucken In the fringe of the Saar ter ritory, to address a demonstration of 100,000 men and women who cams across the border. There can be no compromise on the Saar question,' Goebbels thun dered. "The religion Is German and ever will remain German On a recent tour of the dUtrlct the writer asked men and women In every walk of life as to how they thought the plebiscite would go. Without exception they replied: Even the Communists, In the de cisive moment, will remember that they are, after all Germans. Though they may not like the Hitler govern ment, they will, nevertheleas, vote for Germany." DEATHS BY CHILDBIRTH DECREASING IN OREGON SALEM. (UP) Deaths of Oregon mothers In childbirth were reduced from eight to four per cent per 1000 between 1010 and 1033, the atat board of health announced today. Investigation of the deaths showed that nine per cent had received no medical supervision, 34 poor care and fewer than 19 per cent received good care. 4 Raker Given Degree. PROVIDENCE. R.
