Now, that the Diamond Jubilee Is past history when we all grandly and gloriously celebrated the. seventy fifth birthday of our state, our minds begin to formulate plans for a fitting celebration of the birthday of our na tion. As far back as memory reaches everyone of us can vividly recall with what thrills were awakened early on the Fourth of July by the reson ant firing of guns and continuous popping of firecrackers. The day pre vious had been one mad rush fath er and the older boys to get the last field of corn "laid by" so there would be no guilty conscience looming In the background when they took the whole day off In honor of Uncle Sam's birthday; mother and the girls dressing chickens, boiling hams, baking glossy brown chocolate and shaggy cocoanut cakes. The aroma of spicy pickles, potato salad and r baked beans gave mute testimony that there would be no fasting con nected with tomorrow's picnic. To the accompaniment of firecrack ers, guns and anvils, farm wagons filled with families In their store clothes and Sunday shoes, began to arrive In the celebrating town by 9 o'clock. At exactly ten the strains of "Marching Thro' Georgia," played by the village band, announced to k the waiting crowd that the parade was on Its way. The multitude fell In behind the parade and all march ed to the city park or some shady woods plot near the city limits, as the case might be, where p respiring poltlclana orated from stands decor ated with flags and bunting, Inter spersed by musical numbers by the city band; local grocers dispensed water melons, soda pop, pink lemon ade, popcorn and candy from hastily erected stands, the rough lumber camouflaged by the stars and stripes; the ladles' aid served Ice cream and cake; greased pigs were chased; po tato, sack and three-legged races wholeheartedly Indulged In and, when the sun had set and a few sky rockets had blazed across the sky, a tired and happy throng wend ed Its way homeward with something to think about and talk about during the next few weeks of harvest time. Just such an old-fnshloned, whole some celebration, with the addition of a few more modern frills, Is going to be enjoyed by the people of south ern Oregon In Grants Pass on this Fourth of July. This affair, spon sored by the Grants Pass Post of the American Legion, promises some thing doing every minute from the arrival of the Ashland Legion Kiltie band at six in the morning until the close of the two dances, one modern and one old-time, at midnight. A spectacular parade at eleven o'clock will include the legion, na tional guard, boy scouts, all civic or ganizations, various floats, the queen of the Cavemen and her court anew five bands. In addition to the Grants Pass city band and the Eagles' drum corps, . there will be the Med ford Legion drum corps, the Boseburg drum corps and the Ash land Legion KUtle band. This prom ises to be the biggest and best pa rade ever seen In Grants Pass. After the parade Interest will cen ter around shady, restful city park on the banks of the Rogue river. There will be -plenty of seats and ta bles for all to spread the abundance of food, which only the housewives of southern Oregon know so well how to prepare for an occasion of this kind. There will be music and probably one or two able speakers; water sports of all kinds, the color ful and Impressive coronation of the newly elected queen of the Cavemen, and by no means least, the cool shady park with Its carpet of green in which to relax and rest and visit with neighbors and friends; or take a boat ride or a swim In the river. There la playground equipment for the entertainment of the kiddles. Put on your store clothes, fry up the yellow-legged chickens, bring a well filled basket (and don't forget your store teeth, if you possess any) come early and stay late. You can spend the entire day in the parkif you like or if you prefer you may go to the fairgrounds at 2:30 where there will be a ball game, music, possibly amateur horse racing and other outdoor sports. The details ' will appear In the paper from time to time as they are completed. l Fireworks at the fair grounds In the evening will be followed by two dances a modern dance In the regu lar pavilion and an old-time square dance In one of the other buildings. Toe-tickling music will be furnish ed for each. At the same time a boxing match will probably be staged for those who do not care for danc ing. Some street entertainment will be planned for the hours between the end of the afternoon sports at the fair grounds and the fireworks In order to make it a full day of fun. LONDON.
