WILL HAVE POOL FOR
Durlng the past several months, the
Raymond brothers at Patrick's Creek
Tavern have constructed a lake that
Is to serve as a bathing pool and trout
fish pond, for the benefit of their
guests at the resort.
The lake will be about a halt an
acre in size, and will be ready to
have the water turned Into It within
a few days, according to word received
here from Austin 8. Raymond. The
swimming pool Is expected to be ready
for bathers some time this month.
Fishing ln the lake at Patrlck'a
Creek Tavern will not be ready for
about two years, he aald, due to the
fact that the fish must be raised from
eggs. A shipment of 10.800 rainbow
trout eggs were delivered to the Ray
mond brothers, from Troy, Mont., on
May 26. ln splendid condition.
"In about three weeks the little
rainbows will begin to hatch, and at
the end of two years, dinner guests at
the tavern will see rainbow trout
listed on the menu," Mr. Raymond
stated.
Fishing ln Patrick's creek and Smith
river has been good this spring, and
many guests have been able to make
fine catches, according to reports.

Sir Ronald Lindsay. Apparently Lon.

after tha opening of the house of

BRITISH READY
TO CLOSE NET
ON DRUG RING
LONDON. (UP) British customs
authorities are closing the net about
one of the most dangeroua gangs of
International drug traffickers, It Is
learned. The gang Is said to have
widespread ramlflcatlona and agen
cies. It hss been known for some time
that large quantities of druga are be
ing brought by air Into Britain from
the continent. The difficulty . haa
been to catch the smugglera red
handed.
The smugglers' planes rarely use
the eame landing ground twice and,
while oustoma preventive officers
kept watch on the south coast, the
drugs often were landed on the east
coast. While the vigilance on the
south ooaat waa not relaxed, new of
ficers were drafted Into South Lin
colnshire. It la known that at leaet three
planes have landed aome lnllea In
land from the Lincolnshire coast, and
that the leaders of the traffickers In
this country set up their headquar
ters not far from Grantham.
Recently, the commander of an At
lantlo liner, homeward bound from
New York, radioed the French and
British customs authorities that he
suspected that one of hit. passengers
was carrying druga for disposal in
Europe.
Tho French authorities refused him
permission to land. He had a almllar
reception at Hamburg, and he waa
forced to return In the same ship.
He made the mistake, however, of
landing at Southampton, where the
customs officers were resdy tor him.
Today, he Is In a British prison.
The drugs were confiscated.

Profits In Breeding in Next
Few Years Seen by Dr.
Lytle, Head of State Ani
mal Industry Division
SALEM, Ore. (UP) The surest
way back to prosperity for Ameri
can agriculture is a return to a "horse
baala," Dr. W. H. Lytle, head of
the animal Industry division of the
state department ot agriculture, de- .
clared today.
He aald the day of tne horss on
farms of the nation waa returning,
predicting proflta In horse breeding
during the next few years.
The disappearance of 10,000,000
horses and mules from rural Amer
ica between 1020 and 1932 was re
sponsible for a large measure of the
economic Ills which have beset ag
riculture, Dr. Lytle believes.
Two-Fold Reason
The reason, he said, waa two-fold.
"We have but two ultimate consum
ers In America man and the horse.
Other farm animals cattle, sheep,
hogs and poultry may be likened,
to food and textile factorlea, convert- ,
Ing grass, hay, forage, cereals and
grains Into more concentrated and
more palatable ment products, and
also Into raw textile materials, wool
and leather."
The horses which vanished remov
ed the market for products of at
least 40.000,000 acree of American
farm land, Lytle said. Aa a result
there was a ehlftlng of production.
"Dairy cows were added to eat up
the oata and bay. Sheep were added
to utilize the posture formerly used '
by horses. Mora hogs were raised to '
eat up the excess corn. More poul- ;
try waa raised to convert the cheap- .
ened farm grains Into eggs. In tha
end we find ourselves confronted
with a farm aurplus."
Owe for Machinery
The second depressing factor waa
the purchase of two billion dollars
worth ot tractora and tractor equip
ment by farmers during the period,
Lytle aald. Because of continued de
cline In prices, farmers are still In
debt for probably the larger part of
tbe purchases.
Fuel tor tractors must ba pur
chased for cash, at prices which have
declined but little compared to those
of farm produce, Lytle said. He be
lieved there was still place for
power machinery on some farma,
such as orchardds.
Hones Worth More
Tha trend back. Lytle aald. Is In-
dlcated by the fact that horss prices
toasy sro higher than ln 1929, against
greatly reduced prices for all other .
animals. The United States horse
population waa 12,193,000 in 1933.
Many of the animals were old, 12
years of age and more. Mules num
bered 4,981,000,
It would take ten years to build
up the horse population to 20,000,
000, considered the Ideal number for
the United States, Lytle estimated.
The state department of agricul
ture la encouraging the purchase ot
young stallions of good breeding by
Oregon farmers. Those found free
from defects that would be herldltary
are licensed by the department.
DODGERS IN MAIL BOX
Placing matter ln any box erected
for the reception of mall, with the
purpose of avoiding prepayment ot
postage, has been subjected to a fin -not
exceeding 8300, It wss snnouno-
ed In a bulletin received by the local
postotflce yesterday from Postmaster
Oeneral James A. Farley.
Heretofore there has been no Den
sity for the violation, which haa been
occurring frequently ln Medford and
tha surrounding rural routes.
