SEEDS BETTER THAN
CHICLE FOR CHEWING
PEIPINO, China (UP) Laat year
China imported $600,000 worth of
chewing gum.
This amount Ls estimated to total
about 70,000,000 strips of gum, or
about that many chews.
The traditional Chinese equivalent
of gum Is the watermelon seed of
which tons and tons are consumed
each year throughout the width and
breadth of this vast land.
Willie western movies and airplanes
and bombs have made deep lnroada
into Chinese social customs, the
chewing gum idea apparently has not
made much progress, except possibly
In . the ..metropolis., or ..Shanghai
which is reported to absorb about
half the total gum imports.
Few Chinese pass a day without
cracking a few black dried seeds be
tween their teeth and tt ls estimated
that every Chinese disposes of at
least ten seeds a day. If an arbitrary
population of 400.000.000 ls accepted
It will be seen that gum has a long
way to go.
Except for Shanghai the only other
places in which chewing gum has
been able to get a tooth-hold are
Peiping. Tientsin and few other
cities of similar size. Out in the pro
vinces the watermelon seeds remains
first In the affections of all China
men as a tasty pastime.

and vegetable buyers purchasing pro
duce in California are required to
obtain dealers' licenses, the state
department of agriculture was noti
fied today by officials at Sacramento.
"Oregon operators," said C. J.
Carey, chief of the California division
of market enforcement, "must learn
they cannot evade our licensing re
quirements. One Oregon merchant,
Tony Piazza, is now finishing a Jail
sentence in Placer county and other

Insanity proceedings Instead of a
promised Job and $2,000 were launch
ed today against Frank Bennett, un
employed mechanic who lor nearly
24 hours sat on a load of dynamite
and contemplated blowing himself to
pieces.
The Insanity warrant- was sworn
out by Police Inspector Al Sturzlnger,
one of the officers who finally per
suaded Bennett to abandon his mad
scheme yesterday, and the subject
was taken to a psychopathic ward
fomexaminatlon.
These proceedings followed a report
by Dr. O. D. Hamlin, county physic
ian, that a "cycle of mental depres
sion" was responsible for Bennett's
fearsome plot.
Still bearing In mind the police
promise of the job and additional
cash relief, Bennett protested that he
wasn't "nutty."
