The season's biggest turnout of fans made the first of the holidays which fall within the baseball season a pleasant memory to major league magnates today, although It might rankle a bit In the minds of the players of five clubs which failed to win a game. About 398,000 fans filled the stands In eight cities. The largest throng, 70,000, gathered at the Yankee sta dium to see New York and Washing ton divide a pair of brilliantly played games. Brooklyn made the next best showing, setting an Ebbets field at tendance record of 41,000 for the Sodger-Olant bill, which brought two defeat for the home club. Duncsn McNaughton, 1933 Olym plo games high Jump champion, la now seeking hi doctor's degree at California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., May 31. (AP) On the sun-scorched bricks of the Indianapolis motor speedway, wild Bin cummings has achieved the victory he decided on 30 years go. As 188,000 spectators looked on. the 38-year-old driver flashed past tne nnian line yesterday to win the annual SOO-mlle race at the record breaking average of 104.863 miles aa hour, and collect about 940,000. In prizes and awards. Cummings won by lust 37 second rom Maun bos of Dayton, Ohio, who chased him for the last 60 miles to the oloeest, most sensational ending In the 33 years' history of tne track. Sets Speed Mark Cummings' time was 4:46:08.30. The Indianapolis youngster and Rose both smashed the former epeed mark of 104.103 miles an hour set by Lou la Meyer of South Qate, Cel., In 1933. Thus did the daring veterans of the speedways defeat the plans of race officials who thought to place a clamp on the eiceaslve speed by limiting gaaoun tllotmtnt to 48 gallons for each little racing car. Not one of the 30 cars forced out of the running failed of too heavy fuel con sumption. Cummings himself said he had "about three gallons" left over, It was back In 1914 that "Wild Bill," playing In his mother's door- yard two miles west of the speedway. told her he was "going to win that race some day," He did it In deter mined fashion yesterday, driving the entire 600 miles without relief, but the victory came only on his fifth attempt, and after eight years of driv ing on dirt tracks and other apeed ways. , Duray rile Protest Stewards of the race will consider todsy an official protest made by Leon Duray of Los Angeles, ownei of the oar driven by Rose. Duray contended Cummlnga violated rulea and gained about three-fourths of a lap during the period when the driv ers were slowed down for removal of wreckage from the course. The smaahups, three In number, were all of minor characters. The most serious Injury waa a broken wrist sustained by Oeorge Bailey of Detroit when hla car bounced over a wall at the north end of the track. The other can wrecked were those of Chet Miller of Detroit and Cleorie I (Doc) McKenal of Edlngton, Pa. By BILLY HULEN Secretary Southern Oregon League. Al Droulette, who was playing baseball In the Pacific Coast league about the time the majority of Southern Oregon league players were first learning how to hit a teething ring with their mouth, Is threatening to make a runaway of the league bat ting race. The Grante Paaa catcher walloped Carlstrom of Ewauna last Sunday for two hlte In three trips to the piste to bring his record to 11 blows In 31 times at bat for the mark of .634.
