PAGE ELEVEN LODGE OF ELKS IN IMPRESSIVE RUE Twenty-two candidates were Initi ated as members of the Elks lodge In Impressive ceremonies last evening conducted by Fast Exalted Ruler C. Y. Tengwald and Exalted Ruler J. P. Fllegel. At the same time, ten mem bers of other Elk lodges were received Into the local organization through demit. Following the Initiation a welcoming talk was given the "baby" Elks by O. E. "Pop" Gates, Announcement was made at the meeting that the lodge officers and vmmlttee are preparing for one of tJie greatest out-door gatherings ever sponsored by the Medford Elks, in the form of a picnic at the Elks picnic ground on Rogue river next Tuesday afternoon and evening. In addition to a "songfest," and feed with plenty of beer, a boxing card ! being signed up by Mack Llllard, local promoter. The main event on the card will pit Frankte Monroe, Klamath and Portland fighter who has been going great guns around Portland In recent weeks, and Johnny Shaw, Seattle negro who recently . won a main even In Portland. They will go six rounds. Jack Ray, of Yakima, Wash., and Jebb Wilder. Medford, will also fight six rounds In a seml-wlndup. Wilder made a great hit at a recent Elks smoker in Ashland, when he beat the well known Spider Fields. PLAN DISCUSSED Plans for the American Legion car' a,van to Klamath Falls were discussed at a meeting of the executive com mittee of Medford post No. 16, held at the Hotel Jackson this noon. The caravan which will advertise the Dia mond Jubilee In the Klamath met ropolis will leave here Tuesday after noon at 3 p. m. sharp and local citizens are cordially Invited to par ticipate either with or without cars. All who can go should get In touch with Lee Garlock at the AAA office or H. L. Bromley at Copco, before Monday night. A big caravan is planned with the Medford Legion drum corps, a steam calliope, loud speaker equipment, a Jumping steer and other novel feat ures to entertain the Klamath cltl- rens. The fire's cause was undetermined. TOURNEY SLATED AT GOLF COURSE The "Dubs" and "Duffers" will en gage in open warfare at the Rogue Valley Golf club over the week-end as a Jesuit of the taunts which have been hurled promiscuously for the past several weeks, since finish of the recent tournament among the "not-so-good" divot diggers of the local links. A team made up of 13 duffers will play a similar contingent of dubs, matches to be completed by Sunday night, and the winning team will play the team which recently went to Ash land for a match. Three-quarters of the difference in handicap will be allowed In the dub-duffer engage ment and Jack Hueston, club pro, is looking forward to a grand time In settling the arguments which are bound to arise In the heat of battle. (AP) A cherry new to the local trade was of fered today on the east side farmers' wholesale market. It was known as the yellow French and was of small size and the name Indicated the color, rather sweet. Some Tartarian cherries were sold at 5c lb., with pie stock mostly 4c. Strawberries were showing a spread of 75c to $1.25 crate with most of the really good stuff at 90c to 1 crate. Raspberries were sold. $1.151.40 crate generally with a few Marble heads higher. The latter were offered for the first time. Loganberrlea held a weak tone at 75c to $1, but few moving at the higher mark. The crowd gathered at street inter sections still strewn with the wreck age of debris of three days of riot ing. Guardsmen, laying a field tele phone communication system, made no-attempt to break up the crowd as paving bricks and chunks of con crete came hurling up toward the factory building. Attack Lacks Spirit. The attack was aimless and less spirited than the fighting yesterday, which led to hand-to-hand slugging and bullets. The militiamen had bay onets fixed, but did not use them. City police today were on watch at train, bus and lnterurban stations, after they said they heard a report that a group of 200 communists was en route here from Chicago and De troit to Join rioters. This surveillance of visitors to the city was being carried on while a bombardment of missiles from angry members of a constantly growing crowd in excess of 1600 persons was being laid down against Ohio Na tional guardsmen In the Electric Auto-Lite Plant riot area..
