A Fine Job, THHE best thing about Friday's vote against the Good Government congress I With' one exception that every candidate endorsed by this organization, or indirectly con nected with it, was completely and properly snowed under. This is as it should be. There is no place in this community for any organization, with such record of violence and crime, of tion ; and all for but one purpose, to gain political control, for selfish ends. Those sincere in their desire for better government, should AT LEAST have had the good sense to have dropped the name of an organization that was OVERTHROW of good government. ' As Judge Dunn, the only said, following his endorsement: "I am for good government Government congress I" This forthright repudiation of an endorsement he never sought, probably accounted in large measure for the overwhelm ing vote Senator Dunn received. For the people of Medford and Jackson county were plainly out to ELIMINATE this misnamed organization, once and for all, and not leave enough POLITICALLY to make any second revival possible. That has been done. So now let's FORGET it, let the dead bury the dead, and let's go on to better and more worth while things. Why Medford Endorsed Sales Tax IF the state had voted as Medford voted on the sales tax, the measure would have passed, and Oregon's school and finan cial problems would have been solved. Why didn't it! Because of local press support! Well this newspaper and others HELPED, but as we see it, that is not the entire answer. Other good newspapers in the state, sup ported the tax vigorously, but in their communities the measure was snowed under. Why was Medford the only "white spot" on the entire map? Well, we have the answer to that, which we believe is the correct one. 1 Medford and Jackson county i quality of its citizenship, and its !XITH 200,000 non-taxpayers ; the measure had from the was best for the state, AS A WHOLE, should overcome a spirit of narrow individual self interest. If majrity of the peple of this 8tate onXy voted f or what best suited their POCKETBOOKS, the sales tax was beaten the outset,-for its defeat meant that thousands who had j escaped taxes would continue to escape tnem, ana uinijX trie j property owning minority and the schools would benefit. ! Thn niHin service nerformed bv the Mail Tribune was in , . ,, . . ,, , snowing we ycuijic ui iiicuiuru aim ouii WHAT the sales tax meant, the real issues involved. With this information, the intelligence of this section of the state, was sufficiently high and the spirit of disinterested devotion to the state, sufficiently strong, to overcome a blind self interest, and in a mood of genuine patriotism, put the measure over. That's the answer to the Medford vote. THE present writer spent six weeks in California the first of the year and made a special study of the reaction to the sales tax in that state. . We found no one who, from a purely selfish standpoint liked it, No ono LIKES to pay a few cents extra for what is pur chased, no merchant LIKES to bother with an excise tax, on every sale. . But we also found no one, who objected to it, to the extent of wishing it repealed. The common answer, from all classes, was to this effect: "I don't like It, but look what It's doing for the state. It'a saved us at a very critical time. And I am for It, aa long aa lt'a needed." Garage men, clerks, street car conductors, hotel men, every type and class was contacted at one time or another, and the reaction was the same. ' ' NOW we talk a lot about California being just a hot air state, a crowd of chronic boosters and humdingers, who olnim tho earth and get away with it. There IS plenty of that sort of thing down there, and it gives any sane observer a pain in the neck. But California has some thing more than that or it never would have accomplished what it has accomplished. And that is a sense of state loyalty, of disinterested devo tion to the welfare of the state as a whole, which is nothing short of phenomenal I They may fight over LITTLE things j they may fuss and fumo over this and that) but when the WELFARE OF CALI FORNIA IS AT STAKE, when somothing comes up which af fects the state AS A WHOLE, watch them fall In line and fight till tho victory has been won. It was in that spirit that the people of California rassed the snlcs tax and in spite of tho false charges made during the recent campaign the TEOPLE DID pass it. It was that samo spirit that passed the sales tax in this part of the state, and it was the absence of that spirit, that caused its overwhelming defeat olsewhere, Oregon has tremendous natural resources, a fertility and native beauty that can't be surpassed, throughout the country. It's truly a great state. But as a state it still lacks that STATE spirit, that "Oregon for all, and nil for Oregon'" loyalty which must be aroused and maintained before it can ever achieve its proper destiny. , Harry K. THEY'RE NOT ONLY J A reader sent In this Inquiry: "I heard on the radio a man talk lng for the (an aggregation of quacks) with offices at (this and that ad dress). He spoke about the non operative meth ods of curing hernia, varicose veins, hemorr hoids, etc., and offered booklets free to the pub lic on request, I have written for the booklets. Do you know anything about .this asso elation? It does not seem that they would be allowed to broadcast over the radio If they are not genuine. I have had (so-and-so) for two years . . My reply to this Inquiry was: I cannot recommend the doc tor your Inquire about. Dr. (say Richard Roe, of such and such address) gives the treatment you Inquire about. Later came another letter from the reader, Inclosing two booklets and several other cards or circulars set ting forth all the extraordinary ad vantages the quack outfit offers gut llble customers. Among the handbills these trick specialists peddle I was astonished to find an article by Wil liam Brady, M. D.. and article on The Ambulant Treatment of Hernia" which appeared In my column on October 14, J930. This Is reprinted In the quacks' circular exactly as I wrote It for my column, EXCEPT that the version the quacks ascribe to me. and reprint without my knowl edge or consent, omits this pertinent paragraph: All cases (of hernia, rupture, breach) In children can be cured. In fact a well fitting truss con- -stantly worn will cure most of . them without further treatment of any kind. Even In adults a well fitted truss will cure some cases. v . That paragraph, I hoped, would serve to Impress upon the reader's mind the Importance Cjf the proper fitting and wearing of a truss while the hernia Is under treatment. No Instrument maker or salesman Is qualified to fit a truss In any case. If the patient's own physician pre scribes or recommends wearing a truss he should and will if he Is a capable physician attend person ally to the selection, fitting and per iodic adjustment of the supporter. Without such skilled care, the truss Is likely to be useless or even harm ful. Comment on the Day 's News. By FRANK JENKINS TWO paragraphs In the day's newa are of more than ordinary In terest In these days. Here Is the first: "A vsst Inland dust storm whirled across psrehed fields of mid-America tonight and added Its ravages to that of a major spring drouth which Is taking hesvy toll of crops." a- - AND here Is tha second para graph; "Higher milk prices are predicted. Zooming food costs are feared. La Salle street (the Chicago grain ex change la located on La Salle street) predicted $1 wheat would become a reality unless the grain-raising mid west Is relieved of the current drouth curse within a week." P"OR many years, the government ' baa been trying to raise prices ot farm products BY LAW, but hasn't got very far. As a matter of fact, In the face of MOST ot these efforts prices have declined. But old Mother Nature takes, a hand In the game ot reducing the surplus, and Immediately everybody sits up and takes notice. Prices react UPWARD, because buyers have absolute confidence In Mother Nature's abUlty to reduce the aurplua If aha aeta about the task. - - rr THE paat dozen years or so, there has been a lot of TRYING to Interfere with the law of supply and demand. The British tried It In tha case of' rubber, and tailed dlssstrously. Brsall I tried It In the esse of coffee, and failed even more dlssstrously. I We sre trying It now by the process , of crop reduction by law, plowing 1 under cotton, killing off pigs and hiring farmers to keep wheat and cotton land out of production, but ' In tace of all these efforts prices ! have either stood still or RECEDED. ' Bu UYERS, you see, haven't much confidence In raising prices by process of law, but they have a LOT' ot confidence tn Nature's ability to raits them by the process of cutting down the supply. tlHY do these effort to raise prices by process of law usually taJlr The ansa-er la that they run con trary to human nature. It Isn't um,n "lre wluct production h ot Mo" mm answered by Dr. Brady If a stamped Letters should be brief and written In VACKS, BUT PIRATES In many Items about the ambul ant (not ambulatory, for ltis the patient, not the doctor, who keeps walking about) treatment of hernia I have expressly cautioned against two risks. First, that of the doctor who Injects some- secret or semi secret nostrum. If a doctor Is not capable of preparing and using his own simple medicine for these in jections at a cost, of a nickel or so the chances are he doesn't un derstand Just what he's trying to do. 80 I warn everybody to beware of anyone who pretends to use any expensive "Imported" or proprietary formula for the Injection treatment of hernia or anything else. There is no legitimate excuse for such dumb' ness. The second caution I give the pub lic Is this: If a doctor Is good he practices under his own name and his satisfied patrons send their friends that's the way a good doc tor acquires a reputation and builds a practice. A small bottle of lodln In my bag spilled on my nightgown, but having only one nightgown with me I had to wear It the first night, even though It was spotted over with lodln. Next morning there was not a sign of lodln stain left in the gown. What happened? (H. M. M R. N.) Answer Probably most of the lo dln evaporated when It was votal- laed by the heat of the . body, and some of It combined with starch in the nightgown to form blue starch lodld, or with ammonia or with soda or potash In perspiration or In soap or other cosmetic or medicinal prep aration in the environment, to form white or colorless lodld of sodium, potassium or ammonium.
