Sheley) Eighth grade commencement exer cises wen held In Talent public achooi building Tuesday evening and en joyed by a large number of paronta and fiienda of the 18 graduates, three boys and 15 glrla. Decorations on the walli and plat form of the atage were well planned by the clasa and very pretty In an artlBtto arrangement of the fronds of mountain ferns and mosses, Inter spersed with roses. Miss Dorothy Baughman opened the program with piano music, and later gave two appropriate and pleasing Tocal numbers, accompanied by Miss Esther Holdrldge. Tha spoaker of the evening, A. 0. Strange of the Southern Oregon Kor mal school, was Introduced by O. H. Wilson, teacher of the class. Mr. Btrange'a remarks to the class were ' brief, direct, and meaningful. He urged the pupils to gain as great an education & possible, and atressed the value of correct use of the Eng lish language, well enunciated. He aald that gentlemen and gentlewomen are always courteous; he advised that pupils learn to do some one thing better than someone else has done It: to learn to do their own thinking; to leam a vocation; to study well how best to use their leisure time, and to continue to grow. Principal Ashcraft of the Talent high school gave congratulatory re marka to the class, and welcomed them as next year's freshmen. He also Introduced Fred Rapp, chairman of the board, who presented the diplomas. This class has the honor of stand' lng high In the Stanford achievement tests, sent out by the county school superintendent's office. In closing remarks Mr. Wilson gava credit and xpreased appreciation to the former teaobera of these pupils for the ex cellent foundational teaching which tbey had done. The puplla were presented with many beautiful bouquets, wfilch were distributed by Miss Wisely and Miss McLarnln, members of the faculty. Med ford swimmers are, anticipating the re-opening of Merrick's Saturday afternoon, May 10, at one o'clock when the summer season will be of ficially ushered In at the natatorium. Centrsl Point and Talent Oranges were represented. ' Plana were made to enter a float In the Jubilee parade on Orange day. The following committee was named to act: Mr. and Mrs. Henry Stenrud, Oeorge Helms, Mrs. Fred Homes and Mrs, Edwin Dunn. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Longstreth, who were married recently, were pre sented with a beautiful gift from the Orange. Appropriate speeches were made by the worthy master, Oeorge Andrews, Edwin Dunn and Fred Homes. Thoy were later given a grand rldo around the hall In wheelbarrows, with a serpentine and oonfettl showor. Tha good wishes of the Orange were extended them. lecturer Mrs. Mary Hath waa elected aa a delegate from Bellvlew to the state Orange convention In Roseburg. During the lecturer's hour the memorial group singing, "Blessed be the Tie That Binds," musical reading. "In the Oarden," Bertha Wallla. Mrs. Fred Homes at the Piano: rainbow drill by 18 ladles with tableau and songs; tha memorial at the alter with the chaplain, Mrs. Haael Applegatc. Mrs. Hollemelr and Henry Carter as sisting.
