Public Enemy No. 3456780 returned last week from an auto trip to the south. His last appearanco here was at the sw. corner of the cthse, on a chilly night In the early spring of 1033. Communications no You Want Fehl "Economy?" To the Editor: I note in a recent article in a local u-eckly, that Henry Conger, one of the candidates for county judge, seems very Dosltlre that he could run the county on less money, that he would simply run It differently. No doubt Mr. Conger has entirely overlooked the fact that on January 9, 1933, he appeared as spokesman for a committee before the county couri and Insisted on Jackson County In curring heavy expense -for auditing work, not provided for In the budget and which proved to be entirely un necessary and he further demanded at that time the endorsement and full support of the county commissioners In the policies of the then County Judge, E. H. Pehl, who certainly did not save any money for the taxpayers of Jackson County, but well-n!g'n wrecked the county and Its finances In his months" administration. Do we want that variety of econ omy? Yours very truly, RALPH BILLINGS, County Commissioner. Medford, May II. Give It a Trial To the Editor: I wish to express my approval of the sales tax the voters of Oregon will soon have the privilege of passing upon. We are convinced that by it, the living expense of the proletariat would not be increased as some may fear. The manufacturer or merchant in arranging the price of goods, takes Into consideration the cost of raw material, help, Interest, advertising and pay for his own labor. This last Item must take care of his food, clothing and the taxes on his hold ings. If a reduction is made In any of these expenses to him it will be reflected In the price he charges. The urgent necessity for trade will force this. The sales tax may prove to many, who think they have not been con tributing to the expense of state, that they have done so without be ing aware of it. This will doubtless cause them In the future to take their citizenship more seriously, at least enough so that they , will stop, look and listen before they cross their ballots. This In our opinion, will be one of the great advantages in the adoption of the sales tax. Considering our present dllemna, and .in view of the fact that the sales tax would automatically pass out in two years, It seems we should be good enough sports to give it trial. I am supporting the sales tax, be cause if I am allowed food instead of Just scenery, clothes instead of fig leaves, and If I am permitted to use an automobile in conjunction with my wheelbarrow I am only too glad to help support a government that makes such standards of living possible. The sales tax would care for that In a Just and equitable ; manner. j BERT HARR. Jacksonville, May 11. . : -4 I Home-cooked Chicken Dinner served from 12 to 8 every Sunday at HusonV What Not.
