PA'fiE EIGHT MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, !M"EDFORD, OREGOX. THURSDAY, MAT 3, 1934, I . .-', MOCKING HOUSE SYNOPSIS: Pierre Dufresne, a person ot importance to the traffic officer who helped him. Is ambushed on a lonely road. Watson, the offi cer, goet hack to tearch tor the fmnner: Dufresne in reporting the ncident to Police Captain Robin' eon. Chapter Two BIO BUSINESS 'TVD you tee any one loitering or hiding before the shots?" asked Robinson. "There wasn't a soul In sight, man, beast, or machine," Dufresne an swered. The police chief pondered. "I'm lorry this happened in my baili wick," he declared, "but I'll look Into It myself and see that everything possible Is done." Pierre Dufresne opened bis cig arette case and lit a long Russian cigarette. He gave Captain Robin ion a shrewd look. "I have my own theory, and I hope It's wrong. If this turns out not to have been an 'acci dent,' the alternative Is not very pleasant to consider. It has shaken sp my nerves a bit, but I'll get over that I doubt It your men will be able to uncover anything, Robinson. It looks like a Job for Connors. At any rate, I shall turn the matter over to blm as soon as I get back to tbe elty." It was cold, standing tbere by the .BY WALTER C. BROWN. now. I've got real troubles to look after. Bee me tomorrow, and keep your shirt on It's no money out ot your pocket." "But, the deadline for filing bids is midnight, tonight," the other per sisted. Dufresne baited, forcing his mind to forget his persona) problem! while be dealt with this fresh mat ter. In a moment he was speaking rapidly. "Two can play at that game. Tell Harry to call back our original bid and rewrite It. Cut the figure $100,000 and slip in that' re-pavlng clause under section 9. We'll let them pay tor their fun. And tell Har ry to send the papers to me at the Austerllts for signature." THB puffy man stood back, nod ding and smiling slyly at this piece of strategy. Dufresne went on into tbe busy offices of tbe Depart ment ot Public 8afety. At tbe end of the room was a bozed-ln cubicle with one ordinary size switchboard, presided over by a rary efficient young man. Dufresne dropped Into the chair beside him and the young fellow favored him with a pleasant nod. He had a double ear-piece clamped over bis head and was listening Intently. Presently be pushed these aside and gave his at tention to Dufresne. "Tommy, ask the Director It he The operator waa listening Intently, car. The mid-afternoon sky was al ready like twilight, and out of the yellowish gray density came the first fluttering messengers of the hover ing storm. Tbe breath ot the two men rose steaming, and the Captain, missing his overcoat, slapped bis hands briskly together as Dufresne slid Into the driving seat. "Shall I get one of the boys to ride along with you, Mr. Dufresne?" Pierre Dufresne turned over tbls uggestlon In his mind, then shook his head. "I'll be safe tor tbe next few hours, anyway," he replied. AS SOON as he was clear ot the town, Dufresne put on some thing ot his former speed and It was Just a little after half-past three when he reached the Municipal Building. He drove Into the oourt yard reserved for the cars of rank ing city officials. The policeman on guard came up with a semi-formal alute. Several men whom he passed greeted blm deferentially. It was evident that Pierre Dufresne was not an unfamiliar figure In this nerve-center ot tbe city's official life. Holding no public office, his posi tion was anomalous but reputedly all-powerful behind the scones. Once a highly successful archi tect, he had dropped that for the more lucrative, if less artistic, gen eral construction business. The ipreadlng of that business to State wide proportions hsd Inevitably forced blm Into politics, and, it may lie added, politics ot a very practi cal nature. Tbere were tew official quarters In which he could not bring pressure to bear when necessary. When Dufresne left the elevator at tbe third floor he was button holed at once by a puffy man who had been talking with soma men In the corridor. "I've been trying to feacb you all afternoon, P.D.." the man wheeted. He dropped his voice to a hoarse whisper.' "You're got to see the Mayor. They're trying to give us the run around on that Bridge Boulevard contract. Hallaban has pulled back his original bid and he's cutting f 00, 000 under our figure." Dufresne shook himself free. He looked with Impatience at the puffy man. "Don't bother me with that can see me now," the latter request ed. "Tell blm it's Important." "There's a conference of Police Captains, but It must be about over," the operator volunteered. He plugged in the connection and spoke a few words In a low tone Into the transmitter. "Five minutes private corridor glad to cut It short," be said, Dufresne nodded, lit a cigarette, and kept his eye patiently on the clock until the designated time hsd elapsed. Then he went through a small door and along a short, nar row corridor which ended at a door whose frosted panel bore black let tering In a aeml-ctrcular arch: "Di rector ot Police," and below. In a straight line: "James J. Connors." Aa his visitor entered, Connors smiled and pushed aside the welter of papers, as If welcoming an excuse to deter an uncongenial task, then, aeelng tbe aerloua look on Du fresne's face, dropped the pen and wheeled around In his chair. "What's the trouble, P. D.?" "Jim," Dufresne stated with de liberation, "somebody's trying to 'get' met I waa put 'on the spot' to day!" Connors' eyes began to gleam. The pupils, centered In their discs ot frosty blue, contracted to tiny points. Beneath Dutresne's habit- ' ual polished calm he could discern signs of the strain and panlo that the man would permit neither word nor movement to reveal, "Who could It be?" Connors demanded. "Don't tell me It waa that orank letter-writer?" Mechanically the Irishman reached for one of the long, tat, mahogany-colored clgara which were never far from till hand. . Dufresne shook his bead. "I wish 1 cou Id tell you." he said quiet ly. "When 1 came to you last week with thoee crank letters, Jim, It waa only because they had kept coming long beyond the usual time, I've had such stuff before even mora violent In tone. But this afternoon It became a question ot bullets! Some one went sniping at me be tween Waterdale and Edge Hill." (Copvrloht. HU. til Walter O. E T OLYWPIA, WMh May 8 ftf The stat liquor stor waa upheld' today by the a tat supreme court in an eight to one decision, Justice W. J. Millard dlsaented. The decision, holding all provision of the act to be constitutional, af firmed a. Thuraton county court judgment. Judge John M. Wilson of the lower court, ruling on 4 suit brought by Charles O. AJax, Seattle druggist, alto held the act to be valid In every re spect. The supreme court majority held it wa clearly within the police power of the state to enact a liquor con trol law and that a constitutional provision barring the legislature from tampering with an initiative law for a, period of two years after its adop tion does not apply to the question of regulating the sale of intoxicating liquor. AJax, In a suit attaclclng the valid ity of the law on 17 grounds, sought to enjoin the Washington liquor con trol board from carrying out the pro visions of the new measure. The supreme court majority, how ever, concerned itself mainly with only three of the questions raised in the AJax suit. Smallest Standing Army. CONCORD. N. H.
