MEDFORD MATT; TRIBUTE, MTEDFORD, OREQOW, FRTDAT, APRIL 27, 1931 SCOUT LEADERS TRAINING CLASS Lace Frocks $5.95 to $9.95 Linen Suits $6.95 and $7.95 PAGE FOURTEEN AWARDS GIVEN During the past month seoutmss tws. troop committeemen and a num' ber of fathers of scouts have been attending a training course conducted by the Crater Lake Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. This course con sisted of eight Indoor sessions and one overnight camping trip. Final session of the course was held lsst night at the Roosevelt school, when certificates "Elements of Scout- mastership Fart 3" were awarded to the following men: Ray Harnlsh( Theron Taylor, Walter Clements, A. ' Woodrlch, Harry Ward, Floyd Barrett, Gene Walter, Lester Throckmorton, Jack Heyland, L. T. Cook, T. W. Rlt- ter, L. E. Hamilton, Roy W. McCon- nell, O. M. Franklin, Jr., Dan Moon, Harold Larsen, Charles Bateman, J, H. Olese and Roscoe L. Doty. Larry Schade, president of the eoun ctl, presented the certificates and complimented the men on the Interest shown in their desire to secure addi tional Information on the scout pro. gram, so that they might be of greater service to the boyhood of the com munity. Ladlno Patrol from Eagle Point received the prize, which was awarded to the patrol securing the highest numbor of points during the meet . Ings. Points were awarded for at tendance, winning of Inter-patrol games an dother events. C. E. Gates, past president of the council, pointed out to the men the wonderful opportunities of character building and citizenship training that tne scouting program offers. He stated that the average boy has more than 8600 leisure hours each year, this being equivalent to the number of hours that he goes to school. The things that a boy does during his leisure time may have a great Influ ence on his conduct and his future. Scoutmasters are complimented for splendid work they are coiner. Several reels of movies showing the .activities of Scouts on hiking and camping trips were shown by O. M, Franklin, scoutmaster of Troop No. is, Asmana. Soouts from Troop No. 8, of which Jack Heyland Is scoutmaster, pre sented a short skit, which was ex ceptionally fine. The audience was unanimous in complimenting the boys on their work. Scouts -who took part were: Bob Jones, Larry Schade, Donald Younger, George Gllllngs, Harold Sleight snd Jsck Heyland. CHEVROLET ESSAY With the first prlae of a new Chevrolet Maater Six Sedan and nine cash prizes totaling 1SO0 as Incentives, the essay contest sponsored by Rogue River Chevrolet, Inc, Chevrolet deal ers In this territory Is off to a flying tart. Official entry blanks, which are secured from dealer showrooms free, r sprouting up around town with the profusion of the proverbial blos soms of spring. Officials of Chevro let dealerships In this cone have given out many thousands of entry blanks since the competition opened April 10. The Chevrolet dealers' essay contest can be entered by anyone of legal driving age, except Chevrolet dealers and employees and members of their families. The competition Is for the beit answers to why Chevrolet says 01 lis new iva model: "Drive It Only Five Miles and You'll Never Be Satis fied With Any Other Low-Prlced Csr." The answer must be In fifty words or less. The entrant gets the official entry blank free after taking a dem onstration ride to learn the complete story of the new car. Local Chevrolet dealers are now In creasing their estimates of the num ber of entry blanks that will be re quired before the contest closes on midnight, May 31, 1034, due to the surprising numbor of Interested per sons since the launching of the con tost. The competition, It was dcsorlbed by the dealers, does not require literary skill whatsoever. Ideas come first. It will be listed as to party affiliation and precinct. The clerk's office has been working on the compilation the past week. It Is estimated that the total regis tration will be between the normal mark of 13,000 and 14,000 voters, all parties. In the i.oj general election, the heaviest In the history of the county 14,108 votes were csat. The registration totsled 10,030, a remark able figure for a county with spproxt mately 36,000 population. Not many counties can boast a registration of half the population. There have been close to a thousand cancellations, and about the same number of voters have moved to other counties and states In the past two years. frauds Lnnse Here Frsncls Lange, landscape architect, who was on duty at Crater Lake national park last summer, returned to Medford last evening, and continued to Crater Lake thta morning.
