PAGE SEVEN BIG FRENCH SUB READY 10 IKE OF GLOBE PARIS (UP) The submarine Sur couf, the world's largest undersea boat and believed to be the most dangerous fighting ship afloat, will tart -its world cruise early In June. Estimated at approximately 3000 tons, the Surcouf represent the latest development In submarine warfare, and with Its cruising radius of 20,000 kilometers, or half way around the world, It will visit various ports. Measuring 110 meters overall, with 18 meters amldshlp, the Surcouf has a surface speed of 20 knots and will have an undersea speed of 11 knot, the fastest of all submarines. Its ef fectiveness lies principally in its ability to fire a salvo of 14 torpedoes. The Surcouf Is listed as a defense submarine, despite Its offensive char acter, with Its battery of four 5.6 guns and Its powerful anti-aircraft rifles, the ehlp Is armored heavily on Ite exposed deck and Is virtually In vulnerable to aerial bombs, or light caliber fire from cruisers or destroyers. The Surcouf la almost double the size of the tamoua Qeman U boats. In Its recent plunging tests off Brest, It descended quickly to 80 meters, cruised along at 10 knots and rose as quickly. Equipped with Diesel engines, the ehlp has provisions for long cruises, Insuring normal surface air, drinking water and supplies. The Interior Is a model of mechanical Ingenuity and almost every known safety device Is Included In the protective apparatus. The deck even carries a small alr plftne. The V-4, which la the nearest ap proach to the Surcouf In the Ameri can navy displaces 2800 tons, and the best British submarine Is the x-1, of 2525 tons. It Is probable that a sec ond giant submarine of the Surcouf class will be constructed as soon aa the credits can be provided for the naval budget. I DIVORCE COMPLAINT Fred Puhl, widely known valley rancher, in answer to a divorce com plaint filed by his wife, Anna M. Puhl, charges that his spouse as saulted him with a butcher-knife, hit him In the face with a dlshrag, and threw dishwater upon him, that she was extravagant, and "her declara tions of love were false, but that she married him to secure an interest in his property.' The answer further sets forth that "plaintiff has ample funds for suit money and attorney's fees." (Associ ated Press Photo) . . , DEUEL BUILDING IN RE The Deuel building on East Main ' street, which has been the subject of many discussions before the city council since fire gutted the build ing several years ago, promises to be in good condition for the Diamond Jubilee early In June. General clean up of the building Is underway this week. The braces, recommended by the special committee, appointed by the council to investigate safety of the building, are also being installed. The city officials are anxious to have all buildings made as attractive as possible before the thousands of guests anticipated for the Jubilee ar rive In Medford. A new supply of fancy liquors has arrived at the state liquor store here and a reduction in price of Canadian liquors was reported today at the store. Monogram, one of the popular brands, has been reduced from $5.45 to 4.85 per quart and from $2.35 to $2.10 per pint. Sheriff's Gold now sella at $3.25 per fifth. It was for merly priced at $3.75, Speyside has gone down from $4.00 to $3.35 per fifth. B., of Kansas City, Mo., will give a Christian Science lecture, "Christian Science Ita Case Against Superstition." Dr. Tutt is a member of the board of lectureship of the mother church, the First Church of Christ, Scientist, In Boston, Mass. Rutherford county, N. O., claims to have the largest variety of min erals of any county In the United States. Divine Origin of Bible Proved Is Claim of Evangel Rev. McKay who la conducting re vival services at the Free Methodist church, 10th and Ivy streets, said in part, last night: "The marvelous har mony of the Bible proves lt divine origin. Here we have a book writ ten during a period of 1500 years, by 40 different writers, living In widely separated lands and not one contra diction is to be found." Another proof, declared the evangelist, Is that "It has swayed the minds of earth's greatest scholars 'and finally It gives comfort In the hour of death." PRESBYTERIANS PLAN AT PHOENIX FRIDAY Dr. Gerrlt Verkuyl of Philadelphia and Dr. W. L. Van Nuys of Portland will conduct an Institute on the Christian home at the Phoenix Pres byterian church Friday, April 37. At the afternoon session the con ference feature will be dominant. Those attending are Invited to sub mit written questions on home prob lems they would like discussed. The Ladles' Aid of the church will serve dinner for a nominal price for the convenience of those attending. The evening session will open at 7:30 o'clock, when Dr. Verkuyl will give an address, "Instead of Thy Fathers. It Is hoped that people of the Rogue River valley will respond en thusiastically to the opportunity to hear Dr. Verkuyl, whose visit to the northwest has been made possible by the board of Christian education In an effort to place emphasis upon the application of Christian principles In the complex relationship of the mod ern home. Dr. Verkuyl has written a challeng ing book on "Christ in the Home" and haa made a special study of the problems of the Christian home. EXPERT WOODSMEN HARD TO FIND FOR CCC CAMP PLACES Considerable difficulty to date his been encountered In filling the ex perienced woodsmen quota of the Civilian Conservation corps, It was announced today by the Jackson County Relief committee In the city hall, when applications are being re ceived. Experienced men for the Emer gency Conservation work are not coming In at the rate anticipated. Applications will be received from now until 12:30 noon, Saturday, of this week, ltr was reported today, and all men eligible for the work, are urged to apply at the city hall before that time. Between 75 and 100 ex perienced woodsmen are still needed. Applications must be certified by the county committee before the appli cants will be considered by the forest or park service. Men eligible for the work must bo experienced .woodsmen, legal resi dents, over 25 years of age, with de pendents, BAKER, Ore., Aprll 26.
